What Kills Me Of Our WR Criticism

A lot of the same people that would never draft a rookie or 2nd year WR in their NFL fantasy league (because WR take so long to develop) are shocked and amazed that our freshmen WR are not finished products yet.

most of the bashing I've seen has been directed towards JJ and GSmith. GSmith has had two pretty bad games this year. I still believe he is a legit WR, he's just had 2 real stinkers out there this year.

JJ is a Junior. GSmith is a R-sophomore, right?

I don't think the WR's have gotten more criticism than QB and Oline and DB's

the reality is we have had multiple breakdowns in almost every game. The problem w/ the WR's is if you drop just 1 pass it can have huge consequences the same as a penalty during a final drive.

Actually IMO we have had some improvement lately in WR's. JJ has been hurt but we have seen some quality catches. The balls are still coming out high and those are difficult catches for the pros.

if you play poorly in a loss then you will be criticized.

Or You Get Criticized By Some If You Win

A lot of the criticism of the other pieces of our offense can be directly tied to the injuries and lack of experience in our wideouts. The pieces are interrelated.

Here and elsewhere, we want to give up for 2008 on the receivers we have now, and pine for postion changes and true freshmen. Part of that is the irrational belief common among fans that the player you don't have is going to be better than the players you do. (Often called the Backup Quarterback Syndrome.) Part is recognition that we have some good young talent this past year and this next year, but failure to recognize the talent is raw. Part of it is the irrational belief that college players do not get better with each year of experience and maturity.

Hmmm.... I can think of at least 1 recent example where we kept saying it would happen, but never did.

And obviously one example proves the rule?

How about the innumerable examples of players who did get better over the course of their career? For example, you honestly can't argue that TC isn't better now than he was his first year at Tech, can you? He's a better blocker and he's better at picking up the hole and reading his blocks.

It was a joke. Obviously most players improve with experience and even experienced players improve as they mature physically.

Don't know if I buy the theory that our offensive problems are all related to talented but inexperienced receivers though. For the past 4 years ALL of our offensive problems were attributed to Reggie and before him Suggs.

The criticism is justified. It has even been made publicly by the head coach. The criticism is not catching catchable balls. Nobody's said nothing about a "finished product" except you. Product steps 1.a and 1.b and 1.c are lining up correctly, catching the catchable balls, and blocking. They're pretty damn good at 1.c. 1.a and 1.b has been shaky at times.

The problem is BOTH the QB and recievers are inexperienced. They don't complement each other well. One bad pass hurts the QB and one drop demoralizes the WR,so it goes on and on.Hard to get continuity. How good they really are,I don't know.

Now, why we didn't really practice passing in the Samford game instead of running up the score running I don't understand.

I really don't get this criticism. Do you really think practicing against Samford is better than practicing against our 1st (or even 2nd) team defense?

Yes, again, it goes to the mental thing. I would think it's better for the psyche to get a catch or big play versus a real opponent in the stadium, even if it is a Samford, than to perform well on Rose Bowl Field on a Wednesday.

Most of the criticism is being directed towards the older guys.like JJ and Smith. If they were freshman I would cut them some slack, but they're not. And besides the freshman are playing better than most of the older guys.

man - we got a boat load of wideouts, and more coming next year. TB gotta hitch it up

It's a boatload of wideouts with a boatload of drops. TB isn't Joe Montana, but he's had way too many accurate throws to open receiver that have been dropped.

I'm sorry, but I think some of the criticism is well-placed. Being young and unrefined as a receiver means I won't be upset if you don't block well, or if you run some routes wrong, or if you can't fake out your DB well with a hip drop.

But if your QB hits you in both hands or between the numbers on your jersey, and you drop it, I'm upset. Raw ability to catch the ball is why you're playing wideout. Even CJ had some drops, but we seem to consistently play with flubber on our hands this year.

yes, I think practicing in a REAL game atmosphere is better(if not why don't we just suit up the 2nd unit /jvs and sell it as a game?)
also during season I don't think practices are at the intensity of a game
Kirbee, you are better normally than your question--but for you -when would we practice passing except in a game like Samford to get a game feeling?
