What needs to change in 2022?

Entering Collins 4th season at Georgia Tech, the optimism is low among fans. Collins has reinvented his coaching staff and added transfers with hopes that the Yellow Jackets can pull off a miracle season. On the field, we know what needs to be changed, pretty much everything. We will start with defense, last year our defense was incredibly talented, with players like Jared Ivey, Quez Jackson, Jordan Dominic, Charlie Thomas, Juanyah Thomas, etc. but the in field results were horrible, the defense was arguably the worst in the acc, and now the talent is gone, Collins had to attack the portal for defensive players, I expect the defense to be below average once again. On offense Georgia tech will hope that Jeff Sims can improve his decision making and the O-Line gives him more time in the pocket. But what needs to be changed off the field?

I’ll give a serious response. The O-Line play needs to be better. We were doing some weird RPO stuff with guards going across the line to block air. If we get that fixed, as well as some better reads and fundamentals by the QB I will feel better.

Secondly, if we possess the ball longer the defense will improve incrementally. Then it’s up to Collins to make sure our defensive backfield are in the right position.

Yeah last year against UNC our defense was just clicking, I think the teams after that figured our defense out

Season hinges on 3 factors:

1. improved OL play - need this unit to protect Jeff better. The good news is Chip Long’s offense gets the ball out very fast. Patenaude’s philosophy, in my opinion, relied too heavily on long developing plays that our OL couldn’t block long enough for, and Jeff was being forced to make multiple reads under duress before getting the ball out which hurt his decision making and the offense in general. If the OL can improve even just slightly, I think the offense will look worlds better. That leads me to my second factor:

2. The New offense needs to play to our roster’s strengths AND weaknesses - like I said before we need to get the ball out faster for our OL. Jeff needs to run it more too. He is an elite running QB. Hopefully Chip Long’s quicker tempo and quicker developing plays leads to some gained efficiency and fewer 3 and outs. We need to stay on the field longer which will greatly help out my third and final factor:

3. Defense, especially the secondary, needs to get to JUST average. The offense will help out a lot if they can get it together. If defense can just be AVERAGE, middle of the pack ACC, we can get to a bowl.

where are the wins? WCU Duke VT UVA UNC need to be wins.

the tossups: UCF, Pitt, Miami, FSU

the likely out of reach: ole miss, Clemson, uga

Get our Five wins, take one tossup, play the rest competitively and that’s a good season for Geoff to build on. Should help a lot with recruiting.

OL and defense improvements were obvious #1 and #2. But I lost hope when Key and Thacker were retained.

I’m far more interested in getting out of the ACC and the long term than this season.

What needs to happen? Collins can first maybe read a book. I heard "Coaching For Dummies", may be good for him. We need to have much better play in the trenches. When you lose the battle of the line of scrimmage (LOS), you tend to lose the game. Our O-line cannot push holes or push the other D-line backwards. On the other side, our D-line cannot push the other team's O-line backwards or keep the LOS as a tie. That leads to no pass rush and the ability for the each team to pass at will. Also opens huge holes to run through. While I agree, we need better play from Sims. However; Sims cannot complete passes, when he is running for his life. I think we need to develop better blocking schemes and much better defensive play. Collins, overall; has no ability to manage the game. The game manages him.. Don't confuse the two. There is a difference between managing the game and the game managing you. Collins gets handled, by every other coach. There is so much that needs fixed, that I cannot come up with one single area that GT is good at, in football.

We ran some different concepts that game that caught UNC off guard leading us to believe Thacker had spent the off season making some cool tweaks. What we didn’t realize was that he was going to run that same 3-4 defense every play for the rest of the season.

Watching us rush 3 against Pitt as Pickett literally stood still for 5-8s while shredding us is the most frustrated I’ve ever been watching a Tech game. Think that’s the game that squeezed out the last drop of optimism I had for this staff.
