What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

ie. What former or current GT players do you recall as being clutch?

Outside of Joe Hamilton, my all-time clutch player was Charlie Rogers. When you needed a crucial punt return, Charlie was there. When it was 3rd and long and you absolutely needed the 1st down to have a shot at winning, Charlie was there. He was one of my favorite GT players. But most importantly, I'll never forget in 1998 the 4th down and 8 he converted on a Joe Hamilton pass thrown behind him, for like 12 yards. That play got us into the Clemson red-zone and was the reason we won that game.

I'll always remember Charlie Rogers as being "Money".

Sisson was clutch for sure. Shawn Jones could be too. But for me, give me Charlie Rogers and his braided dreadlocks all day long. He was a little guy who could flat out make the play.

One and only one (my opinion) Billy Lothridge! Greatest single player who did it all. Gainesville Ga should be proud of the man! Run, pass, punt, fgoals, kickoffs. The man was the greatest single player I've ever seen. He replaced Stan Gann (who was a might fine QB as well) as a soph at QB and won many a game almost by himself.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

Although I can't dispute either Lothridge or Charlie Rodgers as beeing big time clutch players, the one that popped into my mind was lil' Jimmy Robinson time after time sliding in under those beautiful long spirals from Eddie McAshan for huge gains to break the backs of our opponents.

There were also times when Shawn Jones shouldered the team and drug them into yet another win.

But I think Hamilton is #1.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

When I was born, Lothridge was with the Falcons, so it is hard for me to say anything about him but I have heard many Tech fans say he was the best all around player to ever wear the Tech uniform.

I have to give my Mr. Clutch to Joe Hamilton. I never felt like the game was out of reach when he was in. I have to believe if he had not had that tough game we lost against Wake Forest, we would have gone to the Orange Bowl and he would have won the Heisman over Dayne. He was THIS close.

John Dewberry had some clutch games. So did Shawn Jones.

I would have to give my "most gutsy" player award to Ed Wilder. This fine young man did not have any business playing on those knees and could hardly walk after the games, but he gave it 125% day in and day out.

Defensively, Pat Swilling was always there for a big play. Ted Roof was another that was sorely missed if he ever was not in the game, always making big stops. Willie Clay was another, although I will unfortunately also remember the fumbled punt against UNC inside the 10 in 1990 that killed us. I guess big plays can go both ways!

It goes without saying that the catches Calvin Johnson has made over the past two years have been some that no other WR in Tech history, or many other schools for that matter, could have come down with.

We cannot forget Eddie Lee Ivery who continually ripped off amazing runs that were not there.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

I met Wilder several times and indeed he was a fine young man. Even gave the guy a hug once for letting it all hang out in a game. BUT, it's still Lothridge for me.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

In my time I'd go with Hamilton. My younger years maybe sisson because he hit some clutch fg's. before that...dunno

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

How about EO Weeler? He could boot the heck out of it when needed! One of my top ten favorite players of all time.

Can't forget Randy Rhino, Robert Lavette, Lucius "bring the wood" Sanford, and Keith Brooking. All were totally clutch...

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

Let's take this to another gear while we're at it and tell me who it would take of the past GT O.Linemen to make up the best line possible. If it weren't for these guys, the glory guys would never have shined.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

Clearly John Davis was an animal. But David Lutz was also a stud.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

George Godsey wasnt bad either. He was pretty clutch and I always felt like we would win if we gave him a chance to drive and win the game. Luke Magnet was pretty clutch too. I dont remember him missing one when the game was on the line.

Re: Kerry Watkins...

Kerry Watkins broke my heart when he dropped the 4th down pass in OT at NC State, but more than made up for it with the one handed catch at Clem-son.

My clutch players are Scott Sisson ('90 at Uva, '90 VT, '91 Uva), Brad Chambers (Ugag '98, Clem-son '97) Joe Hamilton (too many to mention), and Calvin Johnson (without him, last year and the previous year we wouldn't have gone to a bowl game).

Re: Kerry Watkins...

Don't forget that play against NC State in '02 when it was 3rd and 9 (I think) getting close to NC State's endzone, and he caught a 3-yards out. he then drove throw one tackler and dove under another for the final 6 yards to get the clutch 1st down.

That was against a top 10 NC State, and GT went on to win it with on of AJ Suggs few fine moments.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

Clutch Receivers - Jimmy Robinson and John Sias
Clutch RB's - David Sims, Lenny Snow
Clutch QB's - Lothridge, Jones, Dewberry, and Joe
Clutch Special Teams - Sisson, Kelly and Randy Rhino,
and Charlie Rogers
Clutch on D - Lucius Sanford, The Swillings, Brooking,
The Colemans - Marco and Rudolph
If I have to pick 1 - Little Joe!

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

My clutch for one game when as a program we needed a win the most was........TODD RAMPLEY. 1985 All American Bowl.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

Best Tight End: Joel Stevenson - great hands, excellent blocker, & could run for a big guy..... cupacoffee with the Browns back when there were a lot fewer teams/jobs.... helluva good GT guy..... saw him at the GT FB Lettermen's Golf Outing a coupla weeks ago

Probably no one will agree,

but if one game is to define it, then AJ gets my vote for his performance in the 2003 uga game. RB, for whatever reason was taken out of the game and AJ came in to take his first game snaps of the year. As I recall, he threw for two touchdowns (and one interception - was it returned for a td?) really sparked up the team, and kept us from suffering another 40+ point wipe out. All after riding pine the whole year in favor of a freshman. AJ also got to take some snaps in the bowl game, but the poise and leadership he showed in the uga game should courage and determination on his part. Given all the circumstances, I see it as one of the best performances by an individual player I have ever seen at BDS.

If it is defined by one play, then that play is Godsey's catch in the air of the blocked fg try (he was the holder, as I recall) on third down in overtime in the 1999 uga game. That was the single most "heads up" play I have ever seen in college football.

Just my opinion.

Re: Probably no one will agree,

If you want to consider Coach Dodd's glory days and beyond...Clint Castleberry and Pepper Rodgers belong on any list of clutch performers.

Scott Sisson is the best I have seen at Tech....and one of the best clutch performers in college football history because he did it with everything on the line....i.e. Nat'l Championship implications rested on his kicks. Tech football's version of Adam Vinatieri.

Re: What player in GT history was \"MONEY\".

Rampley was clutch in Birmingham. Saw him in the airport a month ago and he still looks like he could play.

Darrell Ghast was clutch in the NC State game when we destroyed them.

Mike Kelly was clutch against Bammer in 1980(?).

Weisenhunt agianst Dotre Name in 1981(?).

The whole defense was clutch in that Clemins game in 1990 when they had that goal line stand...
