What's the deal re: Gailey and Dwyer?

Is this more stubbornness or is there something more to it? Dwyer ran for 4 scores in the first 2 games, then had a solid start against UVA, put has played sparingly since. When Grant came back from his 1st injury, Dwyer was dropped to 3rd string. Now Grant is out again, and Dwyer was passed over by a 4th-stringer?

The rumor is that JD doesn't run between the tackles well and can't block.

It's called running past some gaps when you're not going to beat D-1 DE's to the corners like you did in HS and not fully grasping the blocking schemes, yet.

Or, you could probably contribute it to some dark conspiracy theory on CG's part, which I'm guessing is what you'd prefer.

Something reeks of the stench as underutilized tailbacks Jimmy Dixon, Jermaine Hatch, and Sidney Ford.

Jimmy Dixon grew into a fullback and Sidney Ford had recurring concussions. To be honest I don't remember anything about Hatch's career except that he was here when we had Joe Burns, Tony Hollings and PJ Daniels.

But as beej said, the concern with Dwyer supposedly is that he bounces everything outside which will not work against VT with their speed. He will get carries, but we need to be able to work it inside to be effective against their defense.

he just needs to learn to 1. follow the FB at all times and 2. learn to pass block.

He will see time vs. VT and frankly, i think he is going to wow some people.

I don't know either. Confusing, I mean he put up big numbers so why not play him more? But, even though I may not be Gailey's biggest fan he seems to know how to run the ball. I trust him on this one until the game.

His numbers are somewhat deceiving because of the situations...but there is not doubt he has breakaway speed and will be a special back for us. If Gailey did not like him he would not have so many carries already as a 3rd or 4th string TB.

The problem is not a lack of big plays...it is an inability to take a play where there is only 2-3 yds there...and get 4-5 out of it.

He has to do a better job of a) reading the defense...and reading his OL and know where to make his cuts based on the shoulders, etc. b) no one he needs to stay in and block...no where the blitz is coming from...and no when to release.

In other words...it is not so much a lack of what he is capable of...it is just knowledge on how to make something out of nothing and/or prevent a big loss.

Also...as a true freshman coming into a big game...you don't want the head coach telling the world how awesome he is. Let them find out on the field if/when it happens.

btw...coaches are never stubborn about putting the best players on the field. Matter of fact, Tenuta is one of the most difficult to get players the green light on. Bond is equally discriminating it appears.

Coaches are stubborn about other things like strategy on and off the field, recruiting, etc. (i.e. Cremins stubborness about recruiting more than 6-7 guys...that type of thing).

Kentucky has a true freshman back that bounces it outside very successfully, but of course he was doing it against slow teams like LSU and Florida. That kid would never play for us. I'm glad Gailey knows so much more about college offense than Coach Brooks does.

then turn in your gold for blue and white if Kentucky is so wonderful.

You really are something you know? The point is, you run inside when the hole is there and you bounce it outside when it's open. I can't imagine the kid from KY just ran outside every play no matter what because if he had he wouldn't have gotten anywhere. But then, you've never really exhibited any knowledge of what you speak of, so why start now?

I don't really know what to think of the situation. Clearly, Dwyer is a special talent, but if coaches have told him what he needs to do to get on the field and he's not getting it done then he should lose playing time to those that are getting it done.

There is another part of me that thinks, in regards to the "bouncing it outside" issue, that if you have a great homerun hitter you don't complain about him striking out too much.

I for one would like to have a RB in the backfield that knew his assignments when he didn't have the ball. But hey, that's just me!

Dwyer doesn't get the yards that are there a lot of times...he's always going for the homerun. Lots of his runs end up losing yardage or going for no gain when he could have gotten 2-4 yards. That's why he isn't getting more playing time.

I'm a self-professed Gailey hater, but I agree with him here. Evans is the better overall back right now.

Let's not forget that no one has said Dwyer won't play, just that Mal will start. What's the big deal then? I'm expecting both to get plenty of action and probably split the carries. If we can't run effectively and Dwyer doesn't get any carries then the conspiracy theorists will have something to talk about.

To use the old boxing analogy: styles make fights. Jamaal's style (IMO) works better against a smaller, quicker defense. Dwyer (again, IMO) will be better utilized as a changeup back where he can use his strengths of speed and running through tacklers once they're worn down some.

thats part of it. He fumbles in practice on occasion as well. he needs to prioritize ball security...to play in big games like this consistently
