When are we goint to become a special teams threat?

We use to run back punts for td's,
kickoffs for td's....

we use to try and block punts...

and block fieldgoals...

One of our biggest failures is our inability to make our special teams a factor anymore.

I don't know if any of you have noticed but we don't even try to rush the other guys kicker or punter. We are so inefective trying (or not trying) to rush the punter that the other team has been kicking the absolute hell out of the ball when they punt.

What the hell is the reason?
 
Just my $0.02 here...

On punts, the only thing I can say is we don't rush the punter so we set up for a solid return. You're not likely to get a TD from Kelly Rhino, but you're going to get positive yards every time (hence the ACC record that he's close to breaking). He doesn't have the speed to take one all the way. The closest he's come is last year vs UNC when he got run down by the long snapper.

I like what we've done on kick returns this year with the 3-returner formation. PJ Daniels had a 65 yard return against Wake, and Kerry Watkins has had a couple 30-45 yard returns too.

As for field goals, we blocked one against Duke Saturday. Besides that one, I haven't really paid attention to our field goal rush this year.
 
Some good points JJ.

However, my thinking says if we don't rush the punter, he's going to boom the hell out of it. Therefore, isn't any 10 yd return by RHINO negated by a punter who averages 10 or more yds on his punts because we refuse to put pressure on him?
 
Yeah, I agree. Even if we rushed 1 or 2 more guys, it might cut down on the time the punter has to catch, step and kick. Even if it's a fraction of a second, it could be the difference in a 55 yard punt and a 15 yard shank.
 
In general having this "special coach" for special teams has been a bust.The only improvement I've seen is that Manget is getting more long KOs and no returns.(so we are also having improved KO coverage.Of course we are doing a LOT fewer also).
One of the unmentioned keys to the FSU game was Watkins running out 2nd half KO 5 yds deep .He got to the 18 but we also clipped and ended up on 9 and spent all quarter trying to get field position.The FSU guy did exactly same thing in 1st half and we dominated that quarter.This was a terrible decision for a SR but it goes back to coaching.These days it does not pay to run kick out of endzone.
We have done 2 special positive things on SP teams this yr imo.Ran a fake punt for 1st down in Md game and blocked FG against Duke. Not impressive really with talent we have.

We need a Charlie Rogers! Hope we are recruiting LOTS of speed this yr. I love Rhino but we really need speed with some zig-zag. I will never forget the Peach when he fumbled twice! Every time he catches it I am afraid he will fumble.

Why have a coach just for ST? GO used to coach Rodney Williams, and he did quite well. Since we do have one, why are we no better, probably not as good, as we were without one?
