To be honest, I figure that Gailey is as good as gone. If not this year, then certainly next. I have always been lukewarm about him although I think that he has done some good things for us during his tenure. I figure that if he goes back to the NFL, its where he belongs and most probably where he really WANTS to be. In all honesty, I have always wanted a guy who was a little more fiery than Gailey and one who could better instill a "passion" to play in the team ...and the maybe even in the fans. There are those who are better at this than CCG. Losing Gailey, I think, on balance, is potentially a win-win for us, IMHO.
The problem though is losing Giff Smith. An AJC article announced tonight that Van Gorder, late of Georgia Southern will be leaving his HC position there to coach the linebackers of the Atlanta Falcons....and that a very likely sucessor to him at Ga. Southern is Giff Smith. This ain't good. My understanding is that he is "the man" as far as recruiting is concerned and that it has been his work that has been largely responsible for our projected excellent upcoming recruiting class. If he goes to Georgia Southern, it cannot be good for us.
I think that I am beginning to hate the NFL because of the trickle down effects of hiring college coaches is having on our ability to attarct and keep college level palyers at our place. Yeah, I know that its a free market for coaches out there and I am no Communist, but I don't have to like it. This whole business with Gailey interviewing TWO teams and quietly campaigning for both jobs after having gotten verbal commitments from a bunch of blue chippers doen't enhance our position. And now, it loooks like Giff Smith is going to Ga. Southern. Man, the hits just keep on coming.....
Lastly, it seems to me that Chan may have missed his calling. Looks to me like he'd be a great politician (if there is such a thing as a great politician.). I mean his ability to interview two teams and keep GT and its recruits at bay is a "triangulation" move that even Bill Clinton must admire.
Somebody, please make me feel better about all of this.
Thanks
