Since Georgia Tech has taken two of the last three from UGA, I think it’s time we discuss the best football programs in Georgia. UGA is winless against us in the Kirby Smart era. We also have doubled them up in national titles, and they’ve never been to a New Year’s Six bowl. I think it’s clear that GT is the premier football program in the state.
But who’s second? We’ve beaten Georgia Southern and Mercer this year, leaving lowly Georgia State to consider. But upon a deeper look, the race for 2nd place might be closer than you think. Let’s look at the pros and cons:
University of Georgia
Pros:
· Often ranked #1 in the preseason
· Highly ranked recruiting classes year-in and out
· Starting the #1 QB prospect in the country - no one looks better throwing game-losing INTs
Cons:
· Mascot is inbred and thus constantly in poor health
· Pound-for-pound, they have the worst offensive coordinator in the country
· Play in the SEC East, which is slightly inferior to the Sun Belt
Georgia State University
Pros:
· Located in the preeminent city in the U.S. Southeast
· Defeated Georgia Southern without the use of overtime
· Currently building a modern, new stadium
Cons:
· Don’t have a real campus for drunk tailgaters to trash
· Football team only started play in 2010
· Has never won the Fulmer Cup
It’s close, but I think I’d have to give the nod to State. The fact that we’re even having this discussion while GSU has only had a football team for six years is quite impressive. What say you? Am I forgetting someone? Should Kennesaw State be in the mix?
