Who was worse, Bill Lewis or Dave Braine?

Bill Lewis set our program back by taking a team a year removed from the National Championship and 3 years later going 1-10.

Dave Braine put the GTAA in financial doldrums, and extended Gailey's contract to the point where either a.) we cannot afford to buy him out
or b.) we will spend money we cannot afford to buying Gailey out. Either way we are screwed. By buying him out, we'll have spent a lot of money that needs to be focused elsewhere (like marketing that Braine sucked at too). Buy not buying him out we will have bought ourselves a slow death over the next 3 years as the fan base will decrease at a much more rapid rate.

In my opinion, Dave Braine has done infinitely more damage.

Braine definitely, because he was in charge of the whole athletics department and screwed up. Lewis screwed up a large part of the GTAA, but not the whole thing. Plus, I think it is much harder to win football games than it is to maintain the GTAA. Also commenting that you basically are accepting mediocrity is never a good thing for public perception.

I'll have to disagree and say Lewis.

GT was on the verge of greatness and BLewis pissed it away.

WHAT A LOSER :banned:

Bill Lewis was certainly a mistake --one of the few made by Homer Rice. After two 5-6 seasons (by the way, BL is the coach who started the curse at Charlotteville) his decision to go with transfer Tommy Luginbill over incumbent starting QB Donnie Davis did him in. Right or wrong, the players turned on BL and the result was the 1-10 season that followed.

The next season Lewis was gone, Luginbill transferred out and Davis was the starter for the '95 season. I've heard stories from some supposedly 'in the know' people about the circumstances of Luginbill becoming the starter --but I won't elaborate on that for I'm sure there are those here who know much more about it than I do.

Dave Braine is the clear-cut answer here. In short --whatever happens this year, we're pretty much stuck with CCG for a few more years because I do not think it would be a wise financial move to buy out his contract. You may lose dollars with fewer season ticket sales --possibly a cut in donation $'s --but wouldn't a buy out in the next couple of years cost more?

The guy was a real jack-hole for extending Gailey's contract prior to stepping down --he should have left that decision for his incumbent. I didn't like the job that DB did while here --but when he extended Gailey's contract I thought that said a lot about him as a person --arrogant and spiteful.

I'm no fan of Braine at all, but he really had no choice but to extend Gailey's contract. The timing looked bad, but it was the timing recruiting-wise that forced his hand.

If we beat UGA this year, the Iraq war was justified. If we don't, unjustified.

My guess is that if DRAd decides we need to make a change after this season he can probably find the money to buy Gailey out. I'm not sure how kosher it is, but I would think enough alumns would pitch in to cover the cost.

Who could even ask a question like that?

Bill Lewis is the Devil, and we went to a the NCAA Basketball Championship Game with a coach that Braine hired.

BOR,

I believe you are right. It would cost us, what $2M to buyout Gailey? And a new coach would demand $1.5M to $2.5M per year if he has anything going for him at all.

Given our current deficit, just don't see where the money would come from. How many of our rabid fans are going to pony up an extra $200 to $400 per seat?

We are just screwed..... Hmmmm, unless we pulled a ND and hired Valdosta's coach.

They're pinky and the braine. Yes, pinky and the braine. One is a genius, the other is insane.

This is idiocy... Braine was a guy who made some disparaging comments about his opinion on the success that he felt our football program capable of attaining. He hired Bryan Shelton (responsible for our first NCAA championship), Paul Hewitt (Final Four run, wins over UGA, et al.), and extended the contract of an embattled coach who I think has done a better and better job of adapting every year. I was at the UVA game this past weekend, and there were certainly some painful mistakes that happened (resulting in much stoney faced head shaking while UVA fans in seersucker chaps swayed to their boring-ass fight song), but I don't think that many of them can be directly blamed on Gailey. BeBe had the dropsies. Tyler Evans, who played very well all day and actually had some of the nicer punt returns I recall from Tech recently, inexplicably barfed up the football when we had all but won the game if we had just played a little of the Gaileyball that you all are maligning. This verbal masturbation is really tiresome, especially when it doesn't make any sense... what do you want the AA to do... pony up 30 million to hire Nick Saban who LOSES TO UGA ANYWAY? Look at the overall success of our athletic programs. Braine did some good things, and other than our soured media relations and the ill-advised stadium expansion (which might turn out pay dividends anyway), I do not begrudge him.

That said, Bill Lewis was the wrong man for the head coaching job at Tech. Was he an a-hole besides? Maybe. I think Bill Lewis is the bigger patsy that the folks in this thread are looking for.

Gailey is 2-5 in his last 7 games and 0-5 against Georgia during his tenor. This isn't about one game.

ROFL.

He makes half of Chan's salary per game, and still probably won't win more than we do this year.
