Where is our biggest gap or remaining need for 2007?

Just wondering who we'd target w/ a remaining scholarship out there since Lewis didn't committ & we pulled Everson's offer. The AJC article hints that it would be another ATH or perhaps Defensive player....
I am just hunting for some names or potential prospects that we could rise to the top of their list w/ just a few days left prior to signing day.

Any ideas?:fingersx:

(not that it would be a bad thing for it to be over & for us to sign everyone of our verbals so we'd have a scholarship to offer a pre ferred walk on or a stand out player from last year that we could reward for his performance)

I don't kow, but we've got to have a punt/kick returner that can create some explosiveness on special teams. I can't believe we've had more than half a decade to realize how important a Charlie Rodgers or Kelley Rhino were.

We did have one. His name was Calvin Johnson.

It's a shame that Calvin never returned kickoffs for Tech. Punt returns are much more dangerous, but I would certainly have liked to see him return a kickoff and get a good 15-20 yards to run with the ball without any defenders around him. It would've been a huge boost to the crowd for CJ to return kicks and I guarantee he would've been a much better returner than anything we've had out there the last 3 years.

Getting hurt on a kickoff is much less likely than people would like to believe, so I don't think that's a valid argument as to why he didn't return kicks. We should've used our best offensive weapon in more ways than one for the last 3 seasons.

We already have some good special teams guys in the freshman class. I think our lack of a strong return game on kickoffs was due to the blocking rather than Lil Mal's ability to return kicks. One more block on his return against Georgia and he would have gone all the way. Tyler Evans was doing a good job returning punts prior to his injury.

Uh, Calvin would not have been a good returner. Returning is more about explosiveness and quickness than top speed.

In reference to Punt returner- I would rather have a SURE catch and 5 yds than a maybe catch and 10 yd potential run.Punt fumbles KILL YOU and notice how few long punt returns are really made.
So its nice to have but not a priority to me.
But you might pray for a wedge busting kick-off killer,THAT is what we need in kicking game.

I agree - Calvin was never about juking and jiving to avoid tacklers & finding holes. He was more about using his physical ability to run through tackles.

Knox...

Calvin has plenty of speed that would've helped us greatly on KO returns. Not to mention, giving him 15-20 yards headstart running with the ball would've given him PLENTY of time to get to top speed.

Several times Calvin has been mentioned as the fastest, or one of the fastest, guys on the team.

Re: Knox...

You've got to be able to make quick cuts to be able to return kicks and you've got to get going fast.

Calvin is not built to return kicks. There's a reason you don't see tall guys running back kickoffs or punts.

here's story to go along w/ post above:
Tech’s mystery recruit: Tampa’s Michael Peterson

Georgia Tech will host Tampa Jesuit cornerback Michael Peterson on a Thursday campus visit.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Peterson was committed to Boston College but has reopened his recruitment. Tech assistant coach Brian Jean-Mary has an in-home visit scheduled with Peterson tonight.
Tech has a scholarship to give after backing off Detroit cornerback Cedric Everson and missing out on Oxnard, Calif., running back/receiver Malachi Lewis, who committed this past weekend to Oregon.

We haven't forgotten about the kickers. We have two from N.E. Georgia that might be preferred walk ons this coming year.

That is the same route we used to get Durant.

I think Calvin would have been an awesome kickoff returner, but the risk of injury would have been too high. I wouldn't have done it unless the game was on the line... like the UGAg game after their last score. Of course, Reggie would have still thrown an interception on first down.

Or it wouldn't have mattered if the defense had stopped Georgia on their last drive after we had just scored.

Re: Knox...

If we could give a kick returner 15-20 yard headstart then anybody could return kicks. The problem is we're lucky if they get 10.

You can never have too many offensive or defensive lineman. That is what I am hoping for. The 3 and 4* skill players are great but can do nothing without lineman.

Well you won't get your wish as we are going after a 3 star Athlete from Tampa.

Best news I've heard all recruitment season. I love the idea of farming JUCO for kickers. You never know how a HSer is going to pan out, but JUCO players have a track record, can play immediately, and kickers generally aren't as dumb as other JUCO players so they can handle the academics.
