Who's the most overrated GT football player of all-time?

Saw a topic on another forum where people would list their own team's most overrated player. VT fans said DeAngelo Hall, Bama fans said Brodie Croyle, etc.

I got to thinking, who is ours? The two most obvious candidates are Joe Hamilton and Calvin Johnson, but I can't for the life of me say that those two athletes are overrated. CJ and Little Joe are just about as good as it gets.

So, if not them, then who?

I'm not asking for the most over-rated recruit. If a player didn't do anything at GT, then he isn't elligible for this discussion.

Rashaun Grant comes to mind. Will have to think more on this.

Reggie Ball his frosh and soph year.
hmmmm......

I don't know about that. To me, Reggie was never more than a young player who showed promise (in his first two seasons of course). I can't call him overrated.

If I had to call one overrated, I would go with Damarius Bilbo.

It could be argued that Donnie Davis was the most overrated coming in as the nation's #1 QB. But he had to suffer under Bill Lewis and all the crap that went on back then, so I wouldn't necessarily pin that title on him.

Most overrated would have to be a title earned in the last 15-20 years, really, based on the rise of recruiting services and preconceived notions about recruits. You could probably stretch it back maybe 30 years, but really before then you didn't have as much built up hype for a recruit entering school.

Derrick Stegall could also be discussed as most overrated.

J Dixon.

Think he was like the #2 RB in the country. Played a good bit at fb. Didn't do much.

I'm more talking about players who are viewed as really good-to great even today, but who are also overrated.

Then that is tough to answer. By definition, you are talking about players that by consensus most people still consider great. But some individuals disagree and therefore that minority considers that player overrated.

So you aren't going to get much agreement using that criteria. It is different if you are asking about players who were rated highly at one point who didn't pan out.

Jonathan Smith comes to mind for the same reason as Steagall in the sense that they never seemed to reach the hoped for potential.

Charles Dudish

You children are all too young. He was the number one HS QB in the country in the late 60's. Great all-around athlete who never did much.

I-Perfection Harris, if for no other reason than his name and that he was a Notre Dame transfer.

Joseph Kerr. I saw where he was a highly touted recruit who gave us a verbal on April 1 a few years ago but he never even showed up at GT. :laugher:

Right, but that's what makes it such an interesting question. I'm not interested in which recruits were the biggest busts, because anyone can pull up a Rivals Top 250 list and see who didn't pan out.

This sparked my interest, because I saw Texas fans bickering back and forth trying to decide if Vince Young was overrated or not. It was just an interesting debate.

Was Calvin overrated? Little Joe? Brooking? Shawn Jones? One of the Swillings?
