For the heavy thinkers out there, I ask why would anyone want to have a bulldog for a mascot and why would anyone want to claim to being a UGA bulldog.
First off, in my limited mind and memory, I can't ever remember a bulldog being used in the movies or tv as the heor or the hero's dog.
Take old Lassie for instance, she was a beautiful Collie and then you have Rin Tin Tin and Roy Rogers' dog Bullet both being German Shephards. Both beautiful and highly intelligent dogs. Sooooo, my question, has an English Bulldog ever been in the flicks or tv for anything but a miserable curr? Come this fall I'm thinking there will be quite a few so called bulldog fans wanting to switch over to being Yellow Jackets and Ramblin Wreck fans. Maybe we should have someone to accept interviews from them and see if they can pass muster because I can think of a lot of UGA fans that I am more than proud that they aren't GT fans.
I SAY "CULL THE CURRS".

I know it's a sin to disagree with you, and I'm not especially regarding the humanoids that claim to be bulldogs. It is the 4 legged variety that should sue for divorce.

In the world of critters though, I have never had a bulldog problem when moving a woodpile in the fall!

I think we complement the Dawgs any time we show an obsession with them. It's better to ignore them.

Techfowl: Agreed, but couldnt let this one go...

Why a bulldog? Because they found that their previous mascot (a goat) was getting a little too much "attention" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nono.gif from the undergrads. And figured something a bit uglier would help them focus their studies on something other than animal husbandry...

I really don't know what the fascination is with using a Bulldog as a mascot. A couple of years ago I compiled a list of high school team nicknames in Georgia, and 'Bulldogs' was the overwhelming #1 choice for a mascot. That list is on my office computer and not here at home, else I would give the top 5 or top 10.

Yellow Jackets is just so cool because it's unique, and in GT's case, with Yellow Jackets, Ramblin' Wreck, Golden Tornado ...you have nicknames that are very unique, not to mention the best fight song in all of college.

I'm certainly not a Bulldog, I'm a Yellow Jacket who just happened to spend four years in Athens getting my degree.

As I recall, Georgia adopted the Bulldog nickname in deference to the Yale Bulldogs....one the most powerful football schools at the turn of the 20th century. I also think there was a faculty connection in the nickname being brought down from the north.

While I agree that the Yellow Jackets is a cool nickname. It wasn't unique at the time. A very early NFL football power was the Frankfort Yellow Jackets. No arguing that the 'Ramblin Wreck' is cool and unique.

I also love how in various counties in Georgia nearby high schools adopted the rivaling nicknames of Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs. Off the top of my head you have (or had) Thomasville Bulldogs-Thomas Cental Yellow Jackets(Thomas County); Rockmart Yellow Jackets-Cedartown Bulldogs(Polk County); Calhoun Yellow Jackets-Fairmount Bulldogs(Gordon County);

There are other rivalries I am sure but was lost due to school consolidations swallowing one or the other....in the GHSFHA website I count about 30 various schools that had the Yellow Jackets or Bulldogs as mascots that don't exist anymore.
