Why did the staff move T. Clark to LB?

It appears to me that Clark is a little 'light' to be asked to play LB. I also figured that our Jackets had a supply of OLBs to handle the chores of Spring. Is there some injuries the fans don't know about? Is there a dropout coming? Is Sir Tony that good of an athlete that he has a better chance to get on the field as a LB? With an 'on paper' shortage of DBs, wouldn't CB be the best place for young man Clark to get his best shot at playing?
Obviously, this move sure has me scrathing my head. Perhaps someone who is watching closely can shed some light on this position change. Muchas gracias.

Here's Tony Clark's short bio:

They're simply trying to find a place on the field where he can compete. They didn't feel that cb was that place.

He currently weighs 200. He'll continue to make his impact on special teams.

Maybe he's not built to play CB? Why can't it just be that the staff is matching the player's talents/skills to a position?

My 2 cents. He is too "aggressive" for DB where one mistake can kill you.I saw him on sp teams and was not impressed.Once in a game on KO cover team I actually saw HIM hit a blocker and IGNORE the runner who went right by him for 40 yds.Maybe he had a personal thing for the guy but he picked a bad time to get tough.

actually Tenuta always seems to have a DB/LB type of guy. This guy can cover fast TE/RB and usually plays LB during passing downs.

He also may weigh more than 200lb now.

You are absolutely right Ace. I would feel much much better if you were making these personnel decisions.

Jon T is hard to second guess ,t.Clark may be a Chris R in the waiting room.I think that he does need be bigger so he can stop the run.

I assume that when it comes to a defensive player our coaches know what they are doing between Chan, Tenuta, and Giff. But i do like being a smartass and I especially like calling out GTAce for questioning every little detail he comes across which is habit for him.

I have a problem with Chan's offense over the last few years and his personnel decisions at QB. Other than that, I think our team is run pretty tight. If he could develop a QB we may actually be a pretty good team. Whether that will happen or not, I don't know, I just watch.

BOR.normally I like your comments

but explain our KO teams in light of your "tight" comment.

The kickoff coverage problems last year stemmed from all the secondary that graduated after 2005. A lot of players from that team moved up to the starting secondary. With the subpar recruiting the last couple years, the players that replaced them weren't as ready to play KO coverage.

Subpar recruiting. I think maybe you should take a closer look at the contributions from the past few recruiting classes.

Special teams were hurt by a lack of depth on the team that forced us to use too many younger and untested players on special teams.

We now have that needed depth and if you've been to any of the spring practices, you'll notice all the front line and experienced players that are playing on special teams now.

I've got a better one, Alagold. Explain why two years ago our KO coverage AND punt coverage sucked, and last year only our KO coverage did.

Answer?

We got a good punter. E.g. it wasn't the coverage at all .. it was the kick.

Get a better kicker, and all will be right in the world.
You know, one who is actually capable of making it to the endzone with his kicks.

poor depth. Although Dave Wilson who is now gone was a f-cking dumb ass.

What about a RS?

If Clark is going to redshirt in '07 to bulk up and learn the position then I'd have no problem whatsoever with this move even if it's going into Tony's Jr yr. If he's there to be a 3rd stringer with little hope of seeing the field as a LB while playing on the KO coverage team to use up his JR yr, then I have questions. Especially since, on paper, the Wrecks are thinner @ DB than LB.
On the other hand, perhaps the coaches know his speed will never allow him on the field as a DB;). The move would still be much better with a RS yr:biggthumpup:.

Have you taken a look at the db's we have coming in next year?

Once again he wasn't going to play as a db so they're trying to find a position for him.

Remember there are 85 scholarship players and only 55 players normally play in an average game and some of them are walk ons. Not every scholarship player can be a starter. If can contribute on special teams, then we're better off because that is one phase of the game that is important.

I think you are going to be very surprise with Tony Clark in the next two years.

My guess is that he is at LB to learn how to run stop, and shed blocks better, and that he'll be back in the safety rotation next year. Also, he's fast enough to cover a TE, and strong enough to handle playing weak side LB.

The kid has a lot more talent than this board is giving him credit for.

A ten to twenty pound differential is not that big of a deal when you're moving a guy from safety to LB. He'll gain a few extra bucks and still have the athleticism and speed of a halfback.

Can you say 'Stinger'?
