Why did we go for it on 4th and 6?

That did not make ANY sense to me. I would have kicked the field goal on 4th and 1. The chances of us making it on 4th and 6 were not in our favor. TB has been horrible on 3rd downs and we haven't been making plays when we needed them. Why did they think this time would be different?

Horrible call on the coaching staff's part.

Kick the field goal and still be behind? with the way our defense was playing VA would have just ran the clock out on us. Not to mention that the first down should have been converted but somebody got brick hands.

To kick was the right call. Our defense had played well since 1st quarter. They made a stop and gave it to the O at about the 40. It would have been nice to have driven to the 30 and won with a last second field goal - ala Boby Ross and Scott Sisson. Gailey went brain dead on this call - acting as though 4th and 1 and 4th and 6 were the same call.

Our defense only gave up 7 points in the 2nd half and that was because of a muffed punt that let them start at the 25.

They didn't end up running the clock out on us after that... did you even watch the end of the game? Our defense was more likely to stop them than our offense to get a first down on 4th and 6.

GTKYLE, the coaches were damned if they do and damned if they don't. Now I do not understand the formation as he should have been in the gun.

This is true because last game we were in the same situation except it was I think fourth and 16, and we kicked it and a lot of people were upset about that.

Personally, I get the feeling that Gailey would have been criticized whether we went for it on fourth and 6 or not - unless of course the call worked.

I also feel like there was a potential to lose that game even worse. For some reason Groh decided to keep switching quarterbacks and not giving the ball to his running bacK Perryman, whom we were unable to tackle.

Right now I am more concerned about our lines than anything else. This is the second week in a row that we have gooten whipped on both lines.

I was screaming at the TV when they decided to go for it after the false start. I just felt we had plenty of time to get in field goal range again and our defense, for the most part, had been keeping them in check since the 1st quarter. I think you have to kick there but there is only one person's opinion that matters at that point.

For the record, I was completely in agreement on the kick last game and don't honestly think anyone who understands football can disagree with that call. It was the highest percentage call given the circumstances.

We went on 4th & 6 because we couldn't go on 4th & 1. Too many penalties and completely stupid mistakes today. It's amazing the score was so close.

GTKyle, last week you said you felt that we should have gone for it on fourth and 16 late in the game. Now you are upset that we went for it on fourth and 6. Care to elaborate on why going for it on fourth and 16 is a more appealing option than fourth and 6?

Going for it was the right call...period. No question. I thought we shou'dve gone for it last week as well. Leave it on the field.

We were down by a lot more.

Going for it was the right thing to do. Here's why:

If we score a TD, we're winning, but only by 2 and UVA has the ball. If we don't hold UVA to zero points then we'd need a fieldgoal to win on our final possession. If we kick the FG, then the game is over if UVA scores.

I personally would have kicked it as well but the way the offense played the last series, I'm not sure ot would have helped.

I guess we figured we had our one chance to win the game from their 20 and we took the shot.

BTW, the FG wasn't a gimme as Bell has missed plenty from there in his career. granted, he looks great this season.

why couldn't our defense stop them on 3 and out knowing they were going to hand the ball to Peerman and they started 1st and 15?

the defense is gimmicky and Bowden might score 50 on them as he knows it. i hope we don't blitz next week at all and see what happens.

If we score a TD, we're up by either 1 or 3 as we go for 2.

I was screaming at Chan also. Kick the FG! Our D had completely shut down UVA in the second half.

No. It was the wrong this to do. Here's why:

We were 3 for 14 on the day on 3rd down attempts. This was a passing situation and TB had been horrible in the 2nd half. Those two reasons made getting a 1st down on 4th and 6 very improbable. The field goal was close to automatic for Bell. We had been holding UVA in the 2nd half pretty well and we probably would get the ball back. In that case all we had to do was get to the 30 yard line or so on our next possession to have a decent chance at winning the game.

On the flipside if we didn't get the 1st down then we would be royally screwed because now we would HAVE TO get all the way down to the endzone.

Just a poor decision on Gailey's part IMO.
