Why didn\'t Vince Dooley hire Gailey?

Did he interview him and not hire him because of Chan's "finish up the playoffs" clause then turn to Richt? As much as I can't stand the Prince, maybe he knew how important that extra month was and didn't like Chan's attitude. Just curious.

He didn't hire him because about 30 seconds into the interview he figured out that Chan was not even Donn_n quality.
Smartest move Dooley ever made in his life was not hiring Gailey.

When you look at Richt's season this year it is very similar to last year however they got the breaks.

The auburn game last year they lost on the final drive. This year they caught a 4th and 15 hail mary. SC game very close. The reality is the sec is very down this year, but it may be down for the next few years.

When you hire a coach you take a chance. It will be interesting to see if I coach has learned anything.

I myself am picking up an EXTRA season ticket when we reseat b/c I really do believe that those seats with be worth something.

We play Auburn first game of the year so we will know early how we stack up.

Wrecked, IIRC, that is what was put out publicly. Actually, what you suggested is probably the real truth.

Are you people saying Dooley can pick a football coach?

Unbelievable, if you read enough posts you will see everything. Do you also think Dooley was a great recruiter b/c Hershal went there?

Maybe he stayed in a holiday inn express last night

He didn't hire him because he is a hell of a lot smarter than Dave "no" Braine

Jim Donnan was a very competent coach. His overall record at UGA was very respectable; just not good enough for UGA (including losing to GT 3 in a row). Be it justified or not, the standard of winning at UGA is very high; much higher than you average football school.

I keep seeing it posted that Jim Donnan was a bad hire. I would bet that Tech would not fire a coach that won 67% of his games over 4 years (39-19).

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">You're right, and neither would Ugag. Donn_n was fired for RAMPANT off the field problems which I won't rehash here (btw, this is from a coworker who is a $$$ alumni for Ugag).

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I love it when UGA folks put their nose up in the air and throw out bull öööö like this. Donnan's winning percentage was about as good as the prince's was and he is a legend. It would be better than the prince if you throw out the transition year. UGA didn't fire Donnan because of the winning percentage, there were a lot of other factors involved, which we both know. By the way, I agree that Donnan was a good football coach but had little control over the team. I think he ran a much better offense than CMR does. Your '97 offense (which has similar talent) was a lot better than this years squad.

Probably because he saw a better man standing directly in front of him. I am not a dooleyite.

Now this is incredible. Vince was a good football coach, but - my God - he has been a terrible AD for Georgia.

Bad hires: He hired Ray Goff. He hired Jim Donnan. He hired Glen Mason (for a few days, anyway). He hired Ron Jirsa. He also waited about 5 seasons too long to fire Hugh Durham. (All but Mason are currently unemployed as head coaches. Mason is struggling for mediocrity at Minnesota.)

Mediocre hires: He hired Harrick, who can win some games but brings disgrace to the school at every turn.

Good hires: He hired Tubby Smith, but couldn't keep him. He hired Mark Richt.

His batting average is about 0.350 at best.

Quick correction...he didn't hire Goff. He was AD at the time, but took himself out of the selection processess since he "was too close to the situation" We formed a committee that botched everything and scrambled to hire Goff. Glenn Mason was a fiasco, but I don't think Donnan was a bad hire. He left the program in better shape than he found it; he had just taken it as far as he could. Yes, Jirsa sucked.

I don't claim to have any inside info, but one of my good ugag buddies is one the old families here in Georgia and he tells me that Dooley was a lot closer to hiring Gailey than most ugag fans know or want to believe. He said the playoff thing absolutely killed the deal.

Take it for what its worth.

The story I heard was that UGA wanted Gailey, but Gailey said he would not leave the Dolphins if they were in the playoffs. UGA wanted him to come asap, but Gailey wouldn't budge. So UGA went elsewhere. Gailey told Tech the same thing, but Tech said that was fine. Don't know how many recruits we lost because of it.

Vince had absolutely NOTHING to do with the hiring of Ray Goff. Just for the record.

Regarding VD's hire of Richt, do not forget that Vince wanted to keep Doogan. It was Adams that forced the firing of Jimmy D.
