This is an extremely interesting article from Dave Curtis of the Orlando Sun-Sentinel about the xtra practice sessions that the Bowl teams get. I wish the item had been twice as long. Great quotes from players & HCs such as Wisconsin's HC Barry Alverez: "whatever workout time bowl teams enjoy gives them an advantage and helps them continue to reach the postseason".
"Those other teams are sitting around," he said. "They're not doing anything, and they're losing ground. It just continually separates [the bowl teams from the non-bowl teams]."
When school lets out for the christmas break then teams can practice as often & as long as they want to. The benefit of this is that the younger players get longer looks than at anytime, with Spring Training being a close 2nd. Not only do the Seniors rest, but all the starters break off, leaving the non-starters an xtra 30 mins or so each practice for scrimmaging amongst themselves. Many position changes are also born here.
Excellent read for football fans.

Bowl practice give teams look at future

If the extra practice is guided by ineffective coaching it can be a negative as compared to a staff that can be out recruiting (we might be in the minus column either way)

I think non bowl teams should be allowed extra spring practice days.

Spring Practice

just ain't the same anymore. It is now very controlled. There's limits as to time, as to how many a week, as to how many in shorts, etc, etc.
The practices for Bowl gms can be as long as u want, even 3 straight days of 2-a-days, as with O'L. After 90 mins of putting in your game plan with the starters, u can then let the starters go & do a 30 min scrimmage with Scout team, 2nd string & W-Os running GT plays.
Look at the high-profile HCs talking about what a huge boost it is to have these Bowl practices. There's gotta be something major about it with all the accolades from the big-timers.
