Why I'm concerned about next season....

I fear that next season we're going to lose more than we win, largely due to the coaching transition AND the utterly new offensive system.

Here's a quote from a guy on the Hive that went into detail about the 3-O:

Players have a lot to learn if they want to be effective in this offense. It’s funny sometimes to hear some people call the offense simple, while others describe it as complex. They’re both right. It’s simple in the sense that on any given play, each player has a very specific job to do based on his read. It’s complicated because there are a lot of different reads to make in a lot of different situations. Either way, players need to master the mental game before they can use their physical ability.

The link to his post follows - he goes into great detail complete with pictures and diagrams:

In the long run, I think we're going to be very hard to stop, but next year, at least the first half of next year, is gonna be painful watching the learning curve.

he is right. The complexity of this offense is the execution and decisions on the fly. I talked about this in one of the threads below....

but this is why we should see improvement over the year

and I don't think we will have a losing season.

So I guess FEARLESS is not in your lexicon? Sorry you're so scared.

It would not be that uncommon for a team to suffer a slight setback during a Coaching transition and the implementation of a compex offensive scheme.

I am willing to accept that in the spirit of progress.

egggsackly!!

I agree with your assessment that we will probably have a losing season. But I am not so sure I agree that the coaching transition will be that big of a factor. I personally felt like we were in for tough times in 2008 no matter who the coach is. Losses on the D, kicking specialists and QB issues were going to plague us either way.

But make no mistake, it will take a couple of years for CPJ to get his type of players and attitude instilled. We may have better athletes than he is used to having at Navy, but that does not guarantee they are going to be better at running his offense. It will take discipline as well as skill and I think discipline and single-mindedness is something the current team lacks. Some will find it and prosper under the new coaches, but many aren't wired that way and will seem lost and frustrated. I hope I am wrong about 2008.

But I don't think I'm wrong when I say that 2009 will be the start of a new and unprecendented era of football success on The Flats.

Remember this is Tech. I do not remember any transition that was not rough since Dodd left and Carson took over.

I'm no more worred about next year than I would have been had Chan stayed. Yes, we're in for a transition, but we do have the athletes to complete with anyone on our schedule and I think PJ is the kind of coach who will be able to instill in his team the things it takes to succeed. Could be wrong of course, but I see our normal 7-5 at least for next season.

And as long as we improve over the course of the season, our chances will be better at beating the mutts!

I'll be the first to admit:

I have a lot of "hope" for next year, but given the coaching change, new offense, losses due to graduation, but decent talent behind those folks,

I have no idea what will happen next year, especially before spring practice.

I am less worried and much more positive about next year and beyond with CPJ.;)

was it that rough when Gailey came in? didnt seem that bad to me...most wins in first 3 years of any Tech coach...

Plus we had a net increase in wins Gailey's first year. The "we always take a step back" syndrome is overdone here I think. Let's face it, we're just a paranoid fanbase.

Edit: meant O'Leary's first year.

What about Carson/Fulcher/Rodgers? It wasn't until Pepper had been here a while that everything really started heading south.

Heck, for that matter, Carson went 4-6 three straight years after taking over for Coach Dodd.

And if you're simply talking peaceful regime transitions, Curry/Ross/Lewis were two smooth ones.

Actually we've had a mixed bag with first yera performance. Alexander improved over Heisman's last year, Dodd fell short of Alexander, Carson's first was worse than Dodd's last, Fulcher improved on Carson's last season, Pepper was better than Fulcher's last, Curry's first year sucked, Ross's did too, Lewis as worse, O'Leary was better and Gailey was 1 game worse.

If anything, we are conditioned to expect something like Curry (inexperienced HC in over his head IMO) or Ross. But that doesn't mean it's the norm or that it will happen.

Obviously we'll have to wait and see --for it's a long way until next season.

I don't expect the wheels to fall off --GT has good athletes, PJ is a good coach and quite frankly, until a few teams step up in this conference, the ACC hasn't exactly been a powerhouse full of top-notch teams over the past few seasons. I expect the Jackets to continue to hold their own in '08.

Curry/Ross transition was not peaceful at all...I remember watching television the night it went public that Bill was going to alabama and there were players sitting on the steps of the Edge center(don't remember what it was called back then)crying...and there was quite a bit of rebellion going on during Coach Ross's first year. Joe Sifiri(sp?) I believe was one of the rebels at first and became one of Ross's best O'lineman and team leader during the MNC year...If these young men will stay the corse and take to PJ's way of doing things and come together as a TEAM..The Sky is the limit

Great points all around. And I would even expect CPJ's offense to surprise many teams in our conference.
