Miss State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, USC, DePaul, Penn State, Auburn....

Just a few of the schools chosen by the top 25 high school players in Georgia in 2018 and 2019.

I get players leaving the state for the blue bloods like UK and Duke but we are so ill thought of we can’t beat out these guys.

You would think just by shear luck one or two would want to play in the ATL and the ACC but it’s not happening. It’s almost unbelievable.

So I ask why not Tech? Why are we despite our staff or recent history at least landing a couple of 3 or 4 stars a year from GA?

UgA and GaState are doing much better than we are on this front.

You didn't get the memo? We're in a major rebuild. Maybe once that's over, we'll be able to get good players.

Would you choose to play for a coach who associates with criminals and has a history of getting players suspended by the NCAA?

If we’re looking for a relatively cheap coach who can turn around programs, Art Briles is available. He couldn’t be worse at in-game coaching than Paul Hewitt.

I think kids are avoiding Pastner and the weirdness that follows him around. I don't think we pay very well, either. Those schools all have people willing to drop off money and cars to kids. I can't imagine we have many fans doing the same.

Speaking of salaries, Josh Pastner is getting paid $1.8M this year not including $500K academic and athletic incentives he can earn. In comparison, Brian Gregory barely made $1M.

Pastner received a 35% more assistant coaching budget than Gregory did.

Firing him would also be costly, albeit not as bad as Hewitt. If Pastner is fired from his position for a reason that does not qualify as a “good cause,” then he is entitled to a substantial amount of his base compensation under the contract. For the first three years of his contract, he would receive 100% compensation after termination. Years 4 and 5 provide 75% compensation, while year 6 would be 60% compensation.

He does get a $100K bump every year and will make $2.2M in 2022.

Coaching salary from the school listed.

    Bruce Pearl, Auburn -2.5M
    Ben Howland, Miss State -2.1M
    Josh Pastner, GA Tech -1.8M
    Chris Beard, Texas Tech -1.5M
Mike Boynton , Ok State -1.01M
    Andy Enfield, USC ->1M
    Patrick Chambers, Penn State -.9M
    Dave Leitao, Depaul -undisclosed

So the question, does GT under pay? My opinion is that he's fairly well compensated. This team should be at least top 50 in the country as is the coaches salary.

Let me see if I understand:
    2016-2017 = Year 1 = $1.6M to Pastner + $0.8M to Gregory + $0.9M to Hewitt
    2017-2018 = Year 2 = $1.7M to Pastner + $0.5M to Gregory + $0.9M to Hewitt
    2018-2019 = Year 3 = Guaranteed $1.8M + $0.9M to Hewitt
    2019-2020 = Year 4 = Guaranteed $1.425M + $0.9M to Hewitt
    2020-2021 = Year 5 = Guaranteed $1.5 M
    2021-2022 = Year 6 = Guaranteed $1.26M

So, what we paid / owe to coaches:

    2016-2017 = $3.3 M
    2017-2018 = $3.1 M
    2018-2019 = $2.7 M
    2019-2020 = $2.525 M
    2020-2021 = $1.5 M
    2021-2022 = $1.26 M

Seems like he'll be around until the 2020-2021 season at least.

Could "good cause" be defined as getting oneself in an unsavory lawsuit by association with individuals who said things that hurt the reputation of the school and its basketball recruiting efforts as well as resulted in the suspension of players?

I'd say that's about right. I still have no clue why TStan extended him. He should have waited to see how things looked this year on the court and in recruiting.

Based on court performance and recruiting, he should only get one more year to start showing clear progress, but it looks like we've put ourselves in a bad position financially, so until 2021 it is. Maybe he can turn things around before then.

What’s concerning is this perception problem, whatever it is, was in effect before our current coach.

I’d have to go back to Favors for an example of a highly touted in state recruit choosing us.

Much like Collins bangs the drum in football we appear to have a real brand and culture problem in basketball too which is more unbelievable to me.

There is just too much talent in state to not hit on a few just by dumb luck unless we have been completely incompetent over multiple staffs and/or the AAU circuit considers us a joke.

I don't understand at all - your comment???

We did hit BIG TIME in state with Josh Okogie - just 2 years ago. As it turns out (judging by his performance with the T-Wolves) he was one of the best players of his entire class - let alone ACC.

Okogie was not highly rated when he came in.
While I’ll take a surprise like that all day every day it’s not what I’m talking about.

That is highly rated 4-5 star in state recruits consistently not choosing us.

First part wrong. Second part right on the money. All you need to do is look to the coaches on recording talking about paying players 100k and you know this is as cut and dry as a money issue.

Not every school is doing this. Still doesn’t explain why GT is close to the bottom in terms of talent level.
