This team is a whole lot better than they show on paper. First off, UVA prepared to have Sewell back as their QB going into the fall. You will all remember he gave us fits in Charlottesville. Sewell is an option QB and he ran a completely different offense than the one you see now. He ended up failing out of school.
In comes Lalich who as I can understand is a mobile passer. He was a young guy and the staff had to throw him to the wolves pretty quickly and had to totally revamp their entire offense in the process. Lalich gets busted for underage drinking and they end up benching him.
In comes Verica who is a very slow QB with an extremely accurate arm. The offense that fits him the best is probably something ala Texas Tech but again, the UVA coaches have to adjust their entire offense for the abilities of their QB for the third time in a very early season. I somewhat ignore the results of UVA's schedule early on because of the amount of adjustments they had to make during the course of fall and early season. Groh might be a dufus, but give him credit, unlike Gailey he at least designs an offense around his QB.
UVA has a huge oline and probably the best we will face all season. I would imagine them a LOT like the BC team we played, but with a better more durable running back. In the BC game, if their RB doesn't go down to injury, we probably end up losing that game. Peerman is averaging 6.0 YPC which is .3 YPC less than Dwyer. He is a really good runningback.
On top of that Verica their QB obviously has found his groove. He's got a 65% completion percentage.
This game is deceptive as hell. On paper UVA looks like a pedestrian squad that hasn't done anything including bad losses to UConn and Duke. I attribute that to growing pains of trying to implement a new system. But look at their last 3 games.
UVA totally dominated Maryland 31-0. This is the same Maryland squad that beat a previously ranked #25 Cal team, and they wiped the floor with Wake Forest and handed them their first shut out loss in 8 some odd years. I realize Maryland is a jekyll and hyde team, but UVA is their big rivalry game. You don't come out flat against your main rival. UVA just crushed them. Peerman had 110 yards on 17 carries, Verica was 25/34 for over 200 yards and 2 tds.
UVA then turns around and soundly beats a East Carolina team that started the season upsetting VT who we lost to and then demolished a then Top 10 WVU squad. East Carolina did have two previous losses to NCST and Houston going into this game, so its tricky to know which East Carolina team did they beat. Peerman runs wild for 16 carries for 173 yards and 2 tds. Verica was 25/32 for over 200 yards.
Last week UVA then plays with UNC the entire game before taking them down late in the 4th quarter and then overtime. UNC was ranked #18 in the country. Very strange considering we are ranked 18th in the country. UNC is no slouch. They've been a solid team all year and have some good talent that Butch Davis has been stock piling. Peerman only had 44 yards on 17 carries, but made those carries count in the 4th and OT. Verica was 24/38 for over 200 yards.
Regardless, UVA has beaten three previously ranked teams this season three games in a row. They seem to be finding their groove now and the results of the last few games show it. This team is peaking right now.
This team reminds me a lot of BC but they have a better RB and a slightly worse defense. They have one of the bigger and better OLine's we play if not the best. Their RB is certainly the best we will have faced all year. And their QB is pretty sound too.
Don't be surprised by a close game.
