Not that anyone here will actually care, but Willingham is stepping down, which should surprise exactly 0 people. I feel bad for the guy, even if he did coach at the NAMBLA training academy in South Bend. I thought he handled that entire debacle with class. I wanted him to do well, and show up the Irish, but it wasn't meant to be. Since there are no references to Paul Johnson and Josh Nesbitt and there's no hand waving freaking out in this thread, I'm sure it will die soon.

Did he build Stanford up on his own or did he inherent a decent program?

Right now there is a major outlier in his career it seems and it appears to be there.

Count me as one who is not surprised by this. My guess is he didn't decide to quit all on his own.

Knowing UW . . .

. . . they will now hire the first female NCAA football coach.

Go Jackets!

Your guess is correct.

When asked Monday if this was his decision, Willingham said flatly, "no."

I couldn't find out how good the program was at Stanford, but wikipedia had him winning 7 his first two years. Then he had mostly losing seasons except for his Rose Bowl year and his last year.

My guess is something like Bill Lewis last year at East Carolina. Good players and coordinators got together and won despite him.

I guess that's what I get for not reading the actual article, and instead going by the title of the thread (which the title of the article is pretty much the same).

For some reason I could have told you he wasn't going to set the world on fire at Notre Dame. I always thought he made a mistake in leaving Stanford. That may not have lasted much longer either. Who knows? Good man though who'll wind up with a coaching gig soon if he wants to.

Not a lot of buzz around my office over this. (Didn't hear a thing, actually.) I think most Huskies fans just don't want to talk about it.
