with all that’s going on in college basketball i often ponder if I had to make a choice would I rather us win or be a clean program who follows the rules and graduates players.

The system is broken but I still would choose being clean.

    Seems many others would disagree.

Yeah, this is a worry of mine in football too. It's truly the definition of a rigged game right now, and it's tough to compete in a rigged game if you're not rigging as well.

Is it really cheating if you break a rule that nobody is following and is not enforced?

At some point you are that guy, driving 55 on I85 in the left hand lane.

Let me add Im not saying GT should be running 120 in the hov lane like Louisville but we could run ten over like everybody else.

Find a happy medium. Wouldn't want to be straight up dirty, but if we aren't playing around the edges of the rules and taking advantage of loopholes, we probably should. What that means in practical terms, I have no idea.

I actually kinda doubt that all the teams that make the tournament are straight up cheating. I think it makes us feel better to think they are and absolves us of our terrible contract and hiring decisions.

But if all we wanted was squeaky clean losing, we could have just kept Gregory.

I used to think paying players would ruin the game. Clearly, paying them in the darkness is ruining the game. NCAA is mobster run. Screw that. Pay whoever and fight like hell when they try to punish you.

It still feels very wrong to call the sneaker payments dirty or cheating. Nike signed with the following contracts after Adidas sniped Washington from Nike:

    Michigan - $170 million
    Texas - $200 million
    Ohio State - $250 million

Meanwhile, it took a lot for the NCAA to allow a stipend of a few thousand a semester.

The FBI has a case which sounds good on the surface but, if you think about it, is utterly laughable. The FBI case rests on the schools and the NCAA being the victims. The schools and the NCAA make billions collectively and they're the ones being defrauded. However sleazy or underhanded the Adidas payments looked, they just boil down payments for services rendered.

Yes, the kid does have to ultimately make a misrepresentation to the NCAA when he signs a contract to receive the scholarship. So you can say that's fraud. Tellingly though, the FBI has not charged any athletes. By the FBI's framing, the athletes are at the center of this "fraud." Their signatures are on the false forms to the NCAA. Also, 17 and 18 year olds go to prison all the time. But charging the athletes would show how ludicrous the FBI's theory is.

Other öööö that goes on (academic cheating, hookers, or far worse) is of course still way out of bounds. I have, uh, conflicting feelings about merely paying players.

This. We have evidence that there's a lot of cheating going on, but not every winning program has been directly implicated, and we've arguably been implicated more than many programs better than us. My guess is the things you mentioned have a much greater impact in the gulf between the successful programs and us right now, but that doesn't provide us with the peace of mind that we're winning gold in the ethical olympics.

I'd go even further to say that upping our cheating game won't suddenly have us on the level of programs like UVA or Gonzaga. We have to do a much better job hiring coaches.

Yeah, this FBI case is very interesting to me. The theory is downright ludicrous. I'm not surprised that some eager beaver agents decided to run with it, but I am surprised all the adults in the room are OK with it.

Georgia Tech will be the first fan base in the world to implore the NCAA to throw the book at their program so they can fire a coach to avoid a buyout.
