Currently it sits at 40 kW. This should alleviate the pain of some people trying to listen to night games. If you can get 88.5 (WRAS) now, but not WREK, then you should be able to get WREK in the near future.

Copy of the e-mail I got.

"All,

The FCC has given us permission to begin constructing our 100kW power upgrade. You can see the permit here:
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/pubacc/Auth_Files/1246529.pdf .
When we receive the official copy of this in the mail, it will be posted next to our license on the wall for all to read (as is required).

We have not yet designed or ordered the antenna we need. There are various issues and complications, such as tower structural approvals, antenna design issues, and financial issues, that must be resolved first. We also need some funding from SGA to build it, as we don't have all the money in hand.

We have three years to complete the process. I think we will complete it some time between one and two years from now.

Nothing has really changed yet, but it now, officially, can. I would love your help with this process- there's alot of communication and footwork necessary before the new antenna can be installed and powered up. We here at WREK Engineering really do need your help, now more than ever.

This moment, though, is a time to celebrate. Thank you everyone for your help.

Thanks go especially to Matt Wesolowski, the WREK Engineering alumni currently running WYAB, and to Thomas Hildebrandt, the former WREK Chief Engineer and soon-graduating law school student. They did a good bit of the FCC regulatory footwork and engineering research. Jim Evans did a good bit to facilitate this, providing support to Matt and Jim throughout the process and maintaining continuity throughout planning that began before I even came to WREK. It would NOT have happened without their help.

Trey will be following this up soon with his own words on the announcement.

I'm not sure we'll get the same broadcast radius as WRAS, but I guess it's possible we might get a lot more, depending. Part of broadcast radius has to do with tower height and placement. You'll notice, for instance, that WRFG is 100kw, but WREK still out-broadcasts them at our current 40kw.

beej67,
knew Matt and Thomas back in the day

For the school radio station, WREK sure is a Dawg loving station. Minor leagues for 790.

Interesting link LFD.

I can't exactly post over there, but for anyone here who'd like to hear 2 cents regarding WREK's programming, here's the scoop.

WREK got its license on the auspice that they would play stuff that nobody else in Atlanta played. That wasn't as big a deal when they first got started, but as Atlanta grew, and the commercial market demographic coverage grew, and the number of noncom stations that covered the fringe grew, WREK was in many ways painted into a corner of "weirdness" with its programming. They can't do rock, because other stations are already doing that better. They can't do jazz, because WCLK is already doing that better. They can't do college alternative, because WRAS is already doing that better. They can't do community programing, because WRFG is already doing that better.

What's left is a mishmosh of all of it, one step weirder than anybody else dares to go. That's the essence of being the WREK program director. You can't put anything popular in rotation, because who's going to listen to it? Brittney Spears already has plenty of exposure elsewhere. WREK exists to give exposure to stuff that isn't being exposed.

In short, "Music you don't hear on the radio."

(that being the slogan and all..)
