Paul Johnson is the best coach GT can hope to have. I think the guy's a genius. We can, and have, out-scheme more talented teams. This isn't even a question in my mind. The only problem is, he's also responsible for GT being less talented than most of the teams on our schedule. He shouldn't be praised for overcoming an obstacle that he himself is directly responsible for.

Now, for reasons that we're all aware, Tech will never consistently out-recruit the big boys. I think, assuming nothing changes w/ THE HILL, the best we can realistically finish is in the 25-30 range. So how do we overcome that?

Well, in short, Paul Johnson has to get mean. Not on the sidelines, or on Rose Bowl field. He has to start getting cut-throat when it comes to scholarships.

Why do we have 2 long-snappers on scholarship? Or 5 or 6 walk-ons on scholarship? When CPJ first arrived on the flats, his spring practices were hell. So tough in fact that he ran a few players off. We need to see that again.

Paul Johnson needs to treat every spring practice as he did his first one. Running players off that aren't contributing. It's the only way we can overcome the talent discrepancy that currently exists.

The only question is...are you willing to accept this? Truthfully, I don't know if I am or not. But I know that this will absolutely work.

So he needs to go O'Leary?

I'll feel bad for guys like Coray Carlson not being able to keep their scholarship, but not as bad as I felt after yesterday.

In all honesty, he should only grant scholarships to walkons who end up starting somehow like Kidney. I would also be ALL FOR giving guys like Carlson a scholly for one year...his SENIOR year.

The problem with our current philosophy is that 99% of the time, a walkon who earns a scholarship pretty much keeps it until he's gone.

I wonder what happened to the coach that never hesitated to grab some jersey and let someone hear about it when they made boneheaded mistakes. What happened to the guy who chased the refs off the field at the half after the officials refused to stop the clock for either the first down or getting out of bounds? Do you think he was told to cut that out due to it being so un-pc? Or is this his own evolution or is this just something I perceive?

Not sure the walk-ons are the problem. Some have panned out real well.
But I do think some of the deeper sleepers that we have signed to scholarships needed to be walk-ons.
Can't do anything about that now.
(We should logically get more exceptions and get them max tutoring - but I know that you are assuming nothing changes wit the Hill)
I am not sure running off players is all that either. If we do that in the Spring - it leaves us short handed that Fall. Don't think this is even an answer.
The OL , IMO, has been the biggest disappointment. THese are usually the smartest guys on the team. Some really good ones want a decent education - BECAUSE they are smart - smart enough to know the chances of getting in the League are slim. Why the heck we don't sign more is a mystery to me. Always it's :"We got _____ number on the team blah blah blah..."
Then we end of getting 3-4 hurt at various times and back to having walk ons.
Sharpen Up!

A larger bank account has a funny way of turning hunger into complacency.

Undersigning isn't helping either. If we have X number of scholarships available, then we should be sigining X number of players each February.

That's kindof where I'm going. Start over-signing. Every other team does it. We can't afford not to.

Are there enough people worth a scholly that WANT to come play here?

Not sure whether this is on topic, but I really want Johnson to do or announce something drastic within the next few weeks. He'll probably give us the "we've got to focus on the games in front of us" and "we'll evaluate things when the season is over" crap though.

Remember, PJ didn't hire a ST coordinator until the offseason and he spent most of the year defending not having one.
As much as I think an in-season change need to be made on defense, I don't see it happening. After the season, and maybe after the Georgia game and between whatever bowl game there is (if), that's when you may see Groh go into retirement.

"Paul Johnson is the best coach GT can hope to have."

Pure baloney. 100% crap.

That is not to say he should be fired today.

There is no way anyone could say such a thing for sure.

If the need occurs, there are many good coaches we could get for what we are spending. Coaches that would realize that winning team sports starts with D. That ST should be as important as any other aspect of the game.

After Pepper I can not believe Tech men would make another hire with a coach having this kind of attitude.

How's that been working out for VT ? That's been their game plan. Just saying !

So you want our coach to go into a kid's living room and tell his family that we will take care of their son and make sure he gets a good education... and then run him off to North Alabama if he develops fumble-itits?

Oversigning is banned by the B1G and should be banned by the NCAA. It's the reason Dodd pulled us out of the SEC for crying out loud...

oversigning is stupid, and won't solve our problems. we haven't been having issues landing too many studs with not enough space, we've had issues where the studs we did land haven't necessarily panned out. you can't buy 1000 hondas and end up with a ferrari.

Our coach became a walking Chuck Norris joke and our dorky fans fell in love with it and now can't see the forest for the trees. He has been mediocre-to-bad for two and a half seasons. If he doesn't turn this around he's going to kill our bowl streak and give us two losing seasons in the past three.

Arrogance is bad. Arrogance with no follow through is godawful.
