There's a few reasons, some of them are universal and some of them are unique to our fair Institute. First, the internet doesn't have an IQ-test prior to letting people on, so there's that. Welcome to the digital century, where everyone's an asshole. Myself included. There's also the problem that most people on here, the older ones, probably don't realize that the younger kids, the ones our school is recruiting, know how to use the internet really well. A whole lot better than we did at their ages. We treat ST like a loud tailgate full of jerks, but we forget that everyone can see it.
The second problem is the alumni problem (I'll probably get some people mad at me for this). Tech doesn't make lawyers or doctors or therapists. Tech makes engineers. Very good ones. And that's the problem. Good engineers are assholes. We're used to being right. Which is a great trait for an engineer. Being wrong when you're building a bridge or a nuclear reactor or a block of code is a bad thing.
However, some of us don't always do well when it comes to less concrete problems. Go down to the sub-forum we're not supposed to mention up here in the land of the civilized and see how it well we do when faced with a difference in opinion. The football program is one of those. Because there isn't a right answer, right now. There's not a consensus that there's even a problem - some people truly believe that 7+/-1 is where a school like Tech should be. There's no consensus what the root cause of the problem is - high school offense, arrogant coach or the Hill. And there's certainly nothing coming close to a good answer on fixing anything of those things.
I actually like Paul Johnson as our coach because of this. Because he sounds like a Tech grad. He probably could have a made a righteously dick-headed engineer. He's surly and grouchy. He probably thinks you're an idiot and thinks I'm an idiot. I wanted him to succeed and I like his offense, when it works.
Those are my two cents.
