Totally serious question

Stuck on extremes, I see. Since I don't like personal insults against the coach, I must want to go to a place where everything is sugar-coated, right? Since I can actually accept that positive things are happening amongst all of the negative things going on right now, I must be a sunshine-pumper, right?

No, I'm wondering why you are going to McDonald's and getting angry at the cashier for them not serving prime rib and port wine. There is a place for everyone's tastes. Don't get mad because one place doesn't meet yours.

John, you are right. Dont sweat the nitpickers here.

Being a fan is like being addicted to a slot machine. Some people want to keep pulling the handle because the machine is overdue for a payoff. Some people run around the casino looking for the hot machine. In the end, they all go home and kick the dog.

Fair enough, I guess I'm just disappointed that this place is turning into BBuzzoff during the Gailey Era.

It amuses me how some of the same fonts who were calling for Chan Gailey's head, loudly and publicly, are saying that we should not criticize CPJ because it might hurt recruiting.

or relentlessly bash a player in reggie ball, then say don't do that about so and so because it will hurt recruiting, and make fun of uga fans for doing the same to their players.

edit to say, I am not saying johncu bashed ball...just referring in general

There's a few reasons, some of them are universal and some of them are unique to our fair Institute. First, the internet doesn't have an IQ-test prior to letting people on, so there's that. Welcome to the digital century, where everyone's an asshole. Myself included. There's also the problem that most people on here, the older ones, probably don't realize that the younger kids, the ones our school is recruiting, know how to use the internet really well. A whole lot better than we did at their ages. We treat ST like a loud tailgate full of jerks, but we forget that everyone can see it.

The second problem is the alumni problem (I'll probably get some people mad at me for this). Tech doesn't make lawyers or doctors or therapists. Tech makes engineers. Very good ones. And that's the problem. Good engineers are assholes. We're used to being right. Which is a great trait for an engineer. Being wrong when you're building a bridge or a nuclear reactor or a block of code is a bad thing.

However, some of us don't always do well when it comes to less concrete problems. Go down to the sub-forum we're not supposed to mention up here in the land of the civilized and see how it well we do when faced with a difference in opinion. The football program is one of those. Because there isn't a right answer, right now. There's not a consensus that there's even a problem - some people truly believe that 7+/-1 is where a school like Tech should be. There's no consensus what the root cause of the problem is - high school offense, arrogant coach or the Hill. And there's certainly nothing coming close to a good answer on fixing anything of those things.

I actually like Paul Johnson as our coach because of this. Because he sounds like a Tech grad. He probably could have a made a righteously dick-headed engineer. He's surly and grouchy. He probably thinks you're an idiot and thinks I'm an idiot. I wanted him to succeed and I like his offense, when it works.

Those are my two cents.

BTW this question was not intended to be purely rhetorical. Several of the people I was referring to have already posted in this thread... I was actually asking you why you feel the need to post he stuff I was referring to? Is it just to make you feel better? If so, wouldn't it be better to yell at a wall or your buddies rather than posting it in a major public forum?

Engineers are f*ing know-it-alls who think they can always do someone else's job better than those people can. I say this as that kind of engineer myself.

Still does not explain the personal attacks which the OP is criticizing. Note that he isn't saying criticism is invalid, but "GTFO Pawl" style statements, which don't do anything except mark the poster as a fool.

What I do find interesting is that many posters cannot actually distinguish between childish personal attacks and substantive criticism, which I think plays a role in why you see comments of that nature on this board.

It's because of a couple things in my opinion

1. because our school is highly polarizing and full of know-it-all types.

Think about it:
Engineers vs M Train
Academia vs sports
Greeks vs GDIs
And to some extent Football players vs "rich white snobs"

2. Because engineers look to correct things and are hyper critical, and also value being right more than almost anything.

3. Because many of our fans don't take football seriously enough to REALLY INVEST in it (to their credit) but care just enough to be able to laugh at it.

This all makes a öööötastic storm of one of the worst and least supportive fanbases of sustained success in the country. Our season tickets are bought by our hated rivals. We don't sell out games because we apparently don't schedule hard enough teams despite playing one of the mor competitive OOC's in football especially with the BYU home and home we just had.

This in spades.

GT fans are freaking embarrassing.

The one thing I'll add to what Crew said, which is 100% right, is that if there is one thing that engineers value as much as being right, it's pointing out where someone else is wrong.

BTW, I was equally annoyed with the trashing of Gailey. There was a guy in my section at games who literally yelled "Chan the Man" after every single negative play, but looked pissed if anything good happened. Gailey needed to go when he did, but nobody wants to hear that crap.

Had a guy like that near me at the Pitt game this year. Major douche nozzle. He pretty much pouted that we were winning.

The board is only this negative in times of bad. 2009 was so awesome, it made me stop lurking and actually sign up. 2010 had a good bit of the same effect, even with the mediocre on field results.

It is where it is today after Gaileyesque results. Some buried Gailey threads pop up now and again and the themes are pretty much the same. Lots of threads about effort and motivation in the first couple seasons, lots of threads about firing him in the latter years.

Good question, OP.

I scour the web for Tech football info every day. There are certainly other places to get your fill of football news. I always read ST because there are usually some pretty entertaining posts on here. However, it is crazy to think that a decent amount of posters on this board actually like Georgia Tech in any way shape or form. Recruits definitely read this stuff, and what gets written on here makes an impression. I imagine that it usually makes a really bad impression.

It's not a matter of simply finding another forum that fits one's tastes... This is a publicly accessible website that anyone can read. It's a matter of not making Tech and its fans look like arrogant and irrational morons who bash their own program whenever possible. You can choose not to read this stuff, but you cannot convince a recruit to do the same.

If there are two adjectives that describe Tech people more completely than any others when it comes to sharing their views, they are assuredly arrogant and irrational. Good luck getting rid of that.

You are definitely a sunshine pumper.

Hey OP any recruit who takes the time to read stinGTalk will probably also take the time to figure out that our records under CPJ are 9-4; 11-3; 6-7; 8-5; 7-7; and 7-6. Are you happy with 7-win seasons against weak opponents and losing to ugag every year? Because I'm not.

I come to ST to learn about GT football and also share legitimate concerns about the program (and have some lol's). I think most of the CPJ hate really is out of a desire to improve the program by replacing him. I hope CPJ proves us all wrong and has another 11 win season this year. I really do. I just don't see it happening.

As for VL leaving.... how do you sugar-coat that? What are the positives? I think news stories about how VL chose to give up a scholarship, starting QB position, and sat out of football for a year rather than play football at Tech will affect recruits a lot more than this forum.

If a recruit reads StingTalk right now, what do you think his perception of the GT fanbase would be? Would you want to play for a school whose fans publicly insulted and mocked the coach and their own players? I teach high school and I know that my own students who play football constantly read the forums and it certainly affects their perception of that fanbase.

If they read any message boards of any school the perception will be bad. This board is extraordinarily tame compared to many others.

Is the OP in high school, because that seems like a high school post to me.

Just kidding. I agree. I just wanted to be with the idiots for a while.
