can't read the article (behind paywall) but from the title it appears he is still chipping away and must look pretty good to be eligible. I commend him on the effort and I think it is something he will appreciate the rest of his life.

I think next year we are going to be better on D (no matter how this works out).

With Synjin moving on, you have to imagine that all of the laser focus from the parents is on Jabari now. They certainly made a great deal of effort to keep Synjin operating at a high level. If Jabari comes back with the same energy as his brother, he'll be a force. I hope he makes Calvin and Paula proud.

But... I read a post or tweet from Jabari that he was no longer "Hunt-Days" or associated with Calvin and Paula. This was before the season, think. Is this true? Anyone know anything?

I hope that's not true, for his sake.

Pretty sure he goes by Jabari Hunt now. For reasons unknown.

Perhaps he just decided that hyphenated last name blow.

I would not invest too much energy in worrying about Jabari playing or not. The defense is progressing and has some good chemistry. We did pretty öööö well without him. If he shows up and can play that may or may not be a bonus. He only has one year left of eligibility, so whatever happens it's a short term gain or loss.

Go Jackets!

We are still really weak at DL though, and our DL recruits (Glanton, Henderson, Sellers, [Jackson]) may not be able to help immediately. Whitehead may help but his weight is alarming. I personally think it would be a huge help to have Jabari to hold us over until 2016 so we can build some quality DL depth. It is true that we did pretty well without him, but we were also two great plays from a 7-5 ordinary season, with the most efficient offense in football since they've been keeping stats.

Every team is usually a couple of plays away from either winning or losing a few each year. That's the nature of football. Rarely do teams ever win every single game by more than a touchdown (minus FSU in 2013). Even then they were one great play away from losing the national championship. But they had great players who stepped up when it counted.

The great teams always find a way to win, even if it means the game coming down to a final play. The UGA game sort of defined our season. We still would have had a 'good' season if we lost. But winning took us to the Orange Bowl and put us in the national spotlight. Had DJ not made a great play on the ball, UGA could have very well scored and kicked the PAT to win. But DJ is a gamer, and great teams have players that make plays needed to win big games.

I just don't buy into the "well we almost had just an average season - a couple of bounces away!" Yes it is honestly true, but it wasn't luck. We made the plays to win. And that separates average teams from good/great teams.

This. The difference between good and great is taking advantage of the opportunities. We were very opportunistic this year and it showed.

I agree with this. My main point though is that it took one of the best offenses ever to have our great season. We need to improve our defense so we do not have to count on having a super-efficient big-play-making offense, which we may not have again next year. Hunt could be huge for helping shore up our DL until we hopefully develop some depth.

Jerry, I generally agree. We are improving as a team on defense and should be better next year. But the thing is, I have not seen anyone now on the team who is a good fit for the other DT spot. The others who have subbed for Green this year all play too high for the position. It is either Jabari, a true freshman, or someone who isn't a great fit for the position. I am pulling hard for Jabari to lineup at DT next season.

Lets not get crazy. The defense came up with some opportunistic plays, but don't forget we gave up 600+ yards to MSU and essentially stopped FSU 1 time in the ACC Championship Game. The offense putting up Playstation stats masks some of the issues we had.

We need him and the depth he can help provide.

the defense is still below average, and I don't trust Roof to even put an average D out there, he hasn't shown the ability to do that at all in his career. Like the attitude the team has though, and his recruiting. Think he'd take a demotion to LB coach?

Held Georgia to 24, scored twice on Clemson, forced 5 fumbles in the first 5 minutes against Pitt, held UVA to 10, NCST to 23. We had a ton of success mixed in with our struggles. We finished with a defensive FEI rank of 51 on the year, and that includes games against Southern and Tulane. This defense was average at the very worst.

after being a HC and a sought-after DC? not a chance nor should he nor should we take the coach that has provided the most positive impact on the D and demote him.

that would be really stupid

IMHO the defense played above its talent level - I guess you attribute that too good coaching. We masked a lot of talent gaps with hustle and schemes - and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But look at some of the biggest plays. golden's pick 6 that completely turned the Clemson game was just amazing film study. White made so many hustle and baiting plays. Had our pass rush been better this year, there's a decent chance we win 12/13 games and are in the playoffs.

Yeah I don't think we should be scrutinizing Roof at all. The defense played it's best season since 2009. And in 2009 we had a few NFL-ers on the roster. Roof has been CPJ's best DC. Ridiculous suggestion that he may or should get demoted. For the record, MSU and FSU have two of the best offenses in the country. And UNC is pretty good on offense too.

With the personnel issues Roof had, I think he did a good job. I suspect Johnson put a fire in Roof's belly after the UNC game and Roof clearly responded.

As we get more depth in the trenches, our defense will drastically improve. JHD will add that depth, and even if just for one year, would be huge.

We can go back and forth about turnovers and the impact Roof's coaching and schemes have on generating them, but I shouldn't have derailed this thread.

I hope Jabari is working his tail off in the classroom and gets back on the field, it will benefit the team next year, but more importantly, it will benefit JHD off the field for the rest of his life.
