Please explain this call

Watching the UF/FSU game and Florida was granted a timeout after the ball was snapped wildly. There was no signal by the refs and the QB was actually raising his hands to call a timeout but the ball snapped prior to him completing the actual timeout signal.

Is intent now acceptable for calls?
 
I thought this was going to be a thread about running the dive play on 3rd and 13 or something.
 
Or when we had 2nd and 1 and failed to gain a yard in the next 3 plays

The coach can call timeout from the sideline, that's probably what happened.
