BYU and the 3O

I love the idea of Ken moving up in the world, but BYU has been home of some of the best NCAA and NFL QBs of all time - McMahon, Detmer, Sark, Young. I'm not sure it would be a good cultural fit to move to a ground and pound type of offense.

Good. Better to have him off in Smithsonia than finding a job in the ACC.

How long has it been since their last great nfl quarterback?

Although he is a Mormon and his son plays there, I think this is a big mistake for BYU. The reason is that nobody wants to schedule BYU now; can you imagine if they were running the spread option?

Oh man, that is actually a really good idea. I feel like your typical 25 year old BYU player will be much more effective at running the option than the 18 year olds we were forced to play this year.

For the first two years, anyway.

I'm curious if this is TIC. BYU's 28 year old super-seniors are going to turbocharge this thing. Schools like Navy can run this stuff well because they have okay physicality but outstanding discipline and teamwork. We can run it well because we have much better athletes than Navy, particularly on the lines. BYU probably won't be as disciplined as Navy or have teamwork that is quite as good, but they will more than make up for that with higher quality athletes than Navy with more time in S&C than either ourselves or Navy will ever have. I'm confident that if they hire him, coach Ken will have them looking great. He's a öööö good coach.

Largely tongue in cheek, but it would be interesting to see if they find themselves in the same initial boom as we did in 08 and 09 and how much of a change, if any, there would be to their talent pool once the pre-existing roster begins to graduate.

I think a lot of the frustration we see from Tech fans with regards to the ups and downs of the program under CPJ comes from the lack of something to measure ourselves against. People still think that we're trying to play a different game than everybody else, we know coaches say that to recruits, etc. We can't really gauge anything against Navy because they are playing a different game when it comes to the players they get.

edit: For what it's worth, if they do hire Ken, I completely agree that they're going to be dangerous and he'll be successful.

Their four year recruiting classes right now:
#67
#71
#71
#62

Take that FWIW.

IIRC, we had a top 20 class enrolled when CPJ landed, so I don't expect an immediate boom from them like we had on offense. We got to take advantage of elite athletes playing in it making up for deficiencies in execution immediately. They probably will get to take advantage of better defenses than we've had, though. I think their first year and ours will look pretty similar, but I don't think they will have a 2009. They just don't have a Dwyer and Bey Bey. They might still win 10 games in their 2nd year, depending on their schedule, but it'll look different if they do.

Even still, I don't see them dropping much further in recruiting, so I would expect Ken to be able to get consistent results, whatever they happen to be.

This comment is so ageist. Please keep it away from stingtalk. This is an age-discrimination free safe space.

If he goes does coach Ken have an obvious next-in-line disciple like he was to CPJ? Or would Navy do a search?

The win streak CPJ started over Army is unreal. 13 in a row. Incoming freshman would have been about 4 years old the last time Army won.

Bohannon won 5 games in Kennesaw State's inaugural year of football. How long before he gets a call from somewhere?
