Crazy Targeting Call

Helmet to helmet contact was the point of initiation. Per the letter of the rule, it was a targeting call. Same reason Gotsis got his ejection.
 
This öööö is starting to ruin the game for me. I don't understand why they don't use the same rule rugby has which is that you have to wrap up. There's still some judgement call from the ref on glancing hits where a defender doesn't successfully wrap up, but they can look to that sport for guidance. My suggestion:

Wrap up, no penalty
No wrap up, 5 yd
No wrap up and hit to the head, 15 yd and ejection

Except targeting can be called only when the offensive player is defenseless. A QB in the pocket is defenseless by rule. Not sure how a ball carrier who has turned upfield and lowered his shoulder is considered defenseless.

Hopefully stupid ass calls like this and Gotsis and etc, etc, etc, will get the rule refined a bit.

Because the refs are only looking at helmet to helmet contact now. For whatever reason their ability to care on "defenseless" is debatable from minute to minute.
