Why hasn't this been talked about (unless it has)

I haven't seen this discussed, but then again, there hasn't been a whole lot of football discussion (or excitement) this off season in general.

I do appreciate anytime someone posts actual football content here, so thank you.

Isn't it kinda weird that the defensive coordinator is switching out a job he has done since he's been here? Isn't that weird? It sounds weird. Maybe he's just keeping it fresh. Either way, I kinda like it

I'm guessing the whole coaching staff is feeling a little less secure after last year, and they're just trying to keep it fresh and try something new. I agree it does seem a little odd, but I'm alright with it too.

Unless of course they're just padding their resume because they know they'll be searching for a new gig after an abysmal 2016 :chad:

I listened to an interview with Jamal Golden from the Audio Vault on 680theFan website. This subject was brought up in the conversation. It was Jamal's opinion that the bulk of the returning experience/ leadership this year on the defensive side of the ball would be in the Linebacking Corps; whereas, in previous seasons it had been in the backfield and Coach Roof would want to be coaching that position group, particularly having been a Linebacker himself. That seems like a resonable enough explanation to me.

I really don't like his answer to why:

“Just figured we’d change it up,” Roof said. “Just change it up a little bit.”

That makes it sound like he is just flailing hoping to see improvement somewhere rather than having a well thought out plan.

i dont think its that weird

You mean a former linebacker who is defensive coordinator chooses to coach linebackers while someone else coaches defensive backs and can spend time with that group during games can concentrate on the inexperienced group isn't weird?;)

Jamal Golden's answer makes more sense. DB's lost the most experience and Roof will be putting more on the LB's like Davis. So he's taking more personal responsibility.

The answer Roof gave was an extreme coach-speak non-answer. If taken literally, that's an awful reason to do anything. But coaches can't really give honest answers like "the LB unit will have more responsibility and I want to be more hands-on."

i find that if you are a manager of a group of people, it is always a key benefit to intimately know all of the ins and outs and routines of their job so actually doing the job for a while is always something that i encourage

and as others have said, if more of the coverage will fall to the LBs then its good to have the coordinator work with the group that will have the most complexity in the calls
