I couldnt watch today but even if we gave up 100 points I think Roof has been okay and has consistently improved. Recruiting has been good too.

He's allowed an opening drive touchdown in every single game. Miami was the only game we received first; however, when the O didn't score, Miami still got a TD on their first possession.

We're forced to play from behind in every single game because his schtick is pathetically simple.

Well, accept the ball and score with it and this problem of playing from behind goes away.

Roof is able to hide because we have a ball controlling offense. We could be so much better on D than we are.

Have you watched any games this year? "Ball controlling offense" ain't something you would say if you watched a game.

I can't believe I have to type this, but I don't want to rustle jimmies too badly. Yes, CPJ is responsible. Yes, we've always sucked on D in his tenure.

We still have a terrible DC though. I hope one the immediate things we do with the new AD is find the funds to hire a better staff across the board - offense and defense.

We don't have a terrible DC. We've had some terrible DC's for comparison under CPJ and CTR isn't terrible; he's far from it.

I was speaking of his body of work. Yes, his awfulness is hidden.

His best ever defense was at AU, which won a title and full of NFL talent, was still ranked in the 50s for total defense. He's never been anything more than a bad to maybe only average coordinator.

Roof is one of many things that's so screwed up with this program.

Roof is #357 on the list of things wrong right now. Concentrating on him is missing the forest for the trees.

I think it's a symptom of a major problem though. His salary is what $400k? That's peanuts compared to top level staffs around the country.

Find some money or work with Johnson on redoing his own contract to get some better coaching talent.

Seriously, fire Ted Roof and ask Les Miles to coach the defense for the rest of the year.

Miles was an Offense guy. He liked the slow and outdated Big Ten style type Offense. Not sure I want a guy that runs a 1970 Offense running my Defense.

No, Roof makes 750k which makes him one of the top 20 highest paid DCs in the country. We are not getting our money's worth.

he's the best recruiter we got. Johnson sure as öööö isn't.

this is true. Roof is guy who has landed alot of these younger guys on team who look promising. I think our D has promising pieces such as Brant, Curry, Woods, Adams, Alexander, Gray, etc. Roof also played with Pat Swilling so I'm sure that helped get them. Just hope the D gets a pass rush, so we stop getting killed every game.

The defense has been the brightest spot of the team this season. However, yesterday it was terrible and I don't think it's a stretch to say its the reason we lost.

So, throughout PJ tenure there's been problems on the D. Roof is arguably the mos t successful of the string of DCs Paul has had. What has to change to make a DC at Tech successful with PJ?

I'm not sure the problem is Roof. Firing people has not fixed it yet.

We automatically give our opponents a TD, to start the game or 2nd half.
We automatically give way too much. Too much yardage, too many conversions, too many points, too much time, too much cushion, etc, etc, etc.

It's a good point. Dave Whassisname is pretty solid at Ole Miss. What went wrong here?

We may have the worst 3rd down defense in the country. Whether its 3rd and 2, or 3rd and 20, they just cant get off the field. The lack of pass rush is pathetic.

Dave Whassisname gave up 45 to FSU, 48 to Bama, 28 to Memphis. Is that the definition of solid? Given the 'free for all' recruiting at Ole Miss I would expect them to be better.

Good grief. One bad day does not a D Coordinator unmake. I'll take Roof and the performance of the D this year over many during CPJ's tenure, thanks very much.

There should be a "Fire ACC refs" thread before this one, given the missed hold against Pitt RT when he was engaged with Freeman.

Other than that, yeah, our scheme on Saturday was awful. Ineffective blitzing, too soft coverage (again). Felt like our LBs were out of position the entire game. Too much talent on D to be wasting it like this.

Our defense looks "good" in the rankings because the offense limits possessions (like 8 per game instead of the typical 10-12) so opposing offenses run fewer plays against us. If you look at per play stats, we are terrible.
