my last input today before heading to the big city....
No. 11 Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: Shaun of the Dead
A zombie movie with a sense of humor, where nothing really changes all that much in the end -- this, friends, is the Tech-Tech game in a nutshell. The role of the zombie will be played by Georgia Tech, which has lurched its way to a 2-3 record in the ACC's Coastal Division while slowly losing important body parts like Tashard Choice. The thumping running back was on a 1,000-yard pace (864 yards) for the second year in a row before sustaining a knee injury against Army.
The goal for Georgia Tech will be to eat slow prey in a stagger toward bowl eligibility. The zombie hunter in this chase is a bit quicker and more motivated. Virginia Tech, playing in its second consecutive ACC Thursday night special, needs the win to stay within striking distance of Virginia in the Coastal division.
Like the hero of Shaun of the Dead, Virginia Tech's tools are anything but fancy: A stout defense, the usual special teams and a toss-up at quarterback between Sean Glennon, a pocket-type you might remember from the beating he took in the LSU game earlier this season, and freshman Tyrod Taylor, an option-type QB with speed to burn and a bad ankle. Death by bludgeoning is a good way to describe the preferred method of scoring for the Hokies.
Even with the zombie movie motif, expect a lot of blood Thursday night. All three matchups in the ACC series between the two teams have gotten into the 50s (combined), so there's more action on the scoreboard than one might think, largely because of turnovers and defensive play. And as with zombies, don't underestimate the tenacity of an extremely unpredictable Georgia Tech team -- especially its seventh-ranked defense. The finish, as in any zombie movie, won't be pretty -- but in its own, sloppy way, it could be very, very entertaining. The pick: Virginia Tech by an arm and a leg
