was to me, the greatest Tech game ever. Dodd beat Bama and broke their two year + winning streak...so much talent on that field that day, and to this day Joe Namath and LeeRoy Jordan of Bama say it was the most physical game they ever played in.

I was a twelve year old in the North Stands. Loudest game I have ever been at. Bryant had the game won, positioning for a winning field goal. Inexplicably threw a pass, it was tipped, Don Toner intercepted. Tech won. And you are correct, Namath said Rufus Guthrie's hit on the failed two point conversion was the hardest he was hit in his entire career.

Rufus (Big Steam) Guthrie, Lothridge, Martin, Larry Stallings, Ed Griffin, Dave Watson, Mike McNames, Bill Curry, etc....a lot of guys who went on to the NFL off that team. They lost real close games that year to LSU and Auburn, otherwise had an undefeated regular season. Destroyed Georgia 37-6. Still think that was one of Dodd’s most talented teams
 
Also, on this date in 1864, Sherman began his March to Savannah.

I understand most in our state were "loyalists". Hence the name "Georgia"?

But still no excuse for the Athens azzwipes to name their band the Redcoats! More like turncoats to Freedom.
 
That game against Bama was one of the greatest. The picture of Coach Dodd in the locker room surrounded by Tech players after the game is one of my favorites. I believe that late in the game we stopped them two times deep in our territory with interceptions. And Sports Illustrated wrote a great article about it the next week, which you can still read online. The Tide was ranked number one and had a long winning streak coming into the game, but it was Tech's day. It might have been the greatest day in history to be a Tech fan.
 
I was away at college and won the phsy.ed. prediction contest 7-6. Sure wish I had laid some $$ on it. Got exempted from having to take the quarterfinals though. Great game.

In Kim King's book, he tells of meeting with Bear Bryant in the Georgian Terrace hotel the day of the game. Alabama was recruiting him. He says Bear was apprehensive about the game and referred to the early morning drizzle as "Dodd's weather."
 
My wnife wanted to go to that game but her parents took her 6 yr old brother instead, she still fumes about it when this game comes up in a conversation. I tell her it is OK she was only 8 yrs old but has always been a Tech fan. She has gotten to see a bunch of Tech games after I married her though from the Pepper era to CPJ. That Bama team was loaded but Tech had a pretty good bunch too.
The game that really stands out in my memory was the Tech loss to Florida when Bobby Dodd Jr. & Larry Libertore played qb for the Gators & Ray Graves was their coach. That game & the Bluebonnet Bowl loss to Missouri & Johnny Roland.
