B1G Left Out Again. Best Two Teams in Championship Game?

Saw this discussion on Reddit. Since the B1G has been left out of the Playoffs two years in a row, it looks like they might be considering a model of top two teams in the league playing each other in the championship game rather than top team from each division. I think the sentiment is that OU got in over OSU because Texas was a better opponent than Northwestern.

It guarantees the best record matchup in the conference title game, but essentially makes divisions meaningless. For the ACC it would've been Clemson and Cuse I think.

Thoughts?

Yeah I'd say it would only make sense if you're going to completely do away with divisions and go with something more in line with the structure of college basketball. Have a couple full-time rivals you play every year, then rotate through the rest of the teams in the league. So Michigan could play Ohio State and Michigan State every year, etc.

You're still not always going to get the two best teams in the championship, because you'll have situations where a team like Wisconsin or Iowa ends up with the second best record while avoiding having to play Ohio State and Michigan, but you'd probably avoid having 4 or 5-loss teams in it.

Only 2 teams have ever won the National Championship in college football with 2 losses:

1960 Minnesota Gophers
2007 LSU Tigers (thanks SEC bias!)

I hope the Big Ten does this scheduling thing so they can grab 1/4 spots each year. Having Ohio State ranked one spot behind UGA was ridiculous, especially after blowing out Michigan.

Does UGA now have to lose THREE games each year to be shut out of the playoffs? It certainly looks that way.

Think about it. There were 3 undefeated teams ahead of Georgia and some people still wanted them in with two friggin’ losses. No 2 loss team should ever get a shot at winning the title. Ever.

College football is a total f-ing joke right now.

So Ohio St would play Michigan again? I don't see how that helps Ohio St more than an Northwestern win and I don't see Mich in if they win either

This is step 1 to going to divisionless conferences. I’m on board.

This kind of SOS talk will eventually force ND to consider joining a conference as well.

Not sure I like this idea... it puts entirely too much stock into preseason rankings. Much harder to fall out than it is to win in.

Got rid of the option too soon!!

Edit: I’m serious. We would destroy if we played diff teams each year.

Here’s an idea. Don’t lose to Purdue in the middle of the season.

Precisely this, 100%. This öööö is not complicated. Win all the games you should win. Win all the other games. Win your conference ship and there won’t be much of a debate if you didn’t play a ucf patsy schedule.

Expand the playoffs? The conference championships are essentially first round playoff games if you didn’t shoot yourself in the foot (OSU) and are play in games if you did stub your toe along the way and are able to make up for it (OU). Even with 8 team playoff them teams 9 and 10 are whining that they’re not in. 4 teams is fine.

Notre Dana basically never deserves to get in over another deserving conference champ. ND doesn’t have to worry about getting tested by a quality opponent whereas if Clemson lost there would have been some talking heads that would have found a way to justify uga or OSU getting in.

Yea So SWofford and the boys can take a 5-3 Virginia team over 6-2 tech to the ACCCG

Just the 2 teams with the best conference records (no matter what the division). Sometimes it will be Atlantic vs Coastal. Sometimes it won’t.

Meanwhile, UCF hasn’t lost a football since Trump has been President and they can’t crack the top ten.

Oh, and the two best Big 10 teams did play and Ohio State annhilated Michigan’s hope.

They should do away with the divisions, though, since their whole point is to create a winner who goes to the championship game. Without that purpose, they mean nothing.
