Well as noted in an earlier thread, a bunch of folks have been evicted from East Lots and our group is now assigned the SC Deck. For those of you that park there and tailgate:
  • What is your general game plan?
  • Do you get there early and park on top?
  • How quickly does that fill up?
  • Do you park anywhere and lug your stuff over to the lawn?
  • Is there enough lawn space over there for everyone that wants to use it from the various lots in that area?
We are trying to decide if we want to lock ourselves in for that for the whole season or just park Varsity or maybe even park in one of the GT Parking controlled lots nearer to 10th street.

W21 is booked up pending renewals so that isn't an option for now.

I have been parking at the student center for years. We tailgate on top of the student center parking deck. It rarely fills up and there is plenty of space (but that could change because of the parking realignment). I personally love it. You're near the student center so you can use a restroom that's not a porta potty, get some pre-game Chick-fil-a or swing by the small bookstore for some game day swag. The only bad experience I have had was when Miami was in town and they took over the top of the student center deck. They were banging on the car as a I drove by and yelling obscenities....typical UM fan behavior. Other than that, I recommend it.

Our tailgate has been their for years, and uses the grass lot facing into the center of campus in front of the deck and just west of the Flag building.
  • What is your general game plan?
Get their around 9:30am generally to get our spot, which is still available 95% of the time. On some games where we only get their 3 hours prior to kickoff, usual spot still available 80% of the time.
  • Do you get there early and park on top?
We park are the very bottom by the secondary exit and do not have to wait to get out of deck, save for 1 or 2 big Saturday prime-time games over the years.
  • How quickly does that fill up?
I have not seen it fill up, however this may change with less lots.
  • Do you park anywhere and lug your stuff over to the lawn?
We park right by the lawn on the lower lever, super easy. Several Power outlets are available as well you can access with a long extension cord from the deck.
  • Is there enough lawn space over there for everyone that wants to use it from the various lots in that area?
The current groups over their pretty much have their "designated" spots, but their is probably room for 2-3 more group tailgates before it go too tight.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

The Cheap Bastards in the Gold Zone tailgate

UM fans are legitimately the worst kind of “human” being in all of sports. None of them have an education beyond third grade and they’re the scum of the earth.

Top of the deck is where we have tailgated in the past. Get there early, grab one of the corners. I have been in A2 for several years now. We didn't tailgate last season, but A2 has a nice shaded area to back your car up to and set up under the shade trees. There is also power there.
I can't remember if there are power plugs on top of the student center. There may be.

How do you get into the SC Deck, is it through the A2 lot, or that road on the West side that curves around the deck?

Tech Parkway entrance or Marietta St. Take a right on Ferst St., left into parking lot entrance. Have your pass ready to not hold up traffic. I used to park there.

A2 is closed off to the Student Center deck. They do open the deck gate after the game to facilitate exit. A2 used to be part of Student Center parking until about 4-5 years ago.

The W24 lot has also been eliminated (now it's the Marcus Nanotechnology Building). If ticket sales increase over the next couple years, I wonder where all the extra cars will park.

Maybe someday market demand will require us to increase prices. I can only hope that some day I'm required to spend more to enjoy GT football.

Plus 1 on the Cane fans ...yeah that was highly annoying. I hope since the spots are shrinking GT fans can dominate SC deck now. We should just let the APD handle Cane fan transportation.

I don't think I have ever seen the Student Center deck upper level full. Still plenty of space available. It would be nice to fill the deck with Tech fans as opposed to selling them to opposing fans.

They do need to work out a better traffic plan for exit from the lot. Also, more folks need to realize Marietta Street takes you all the way to 285. Hell, it takes you to the Marietta square if you stay on it, becoming Atlanta Road at 285. There is usually light traffic once you pass Howell Mill. I have made the mistake of trying Northside Drive post game, which is packed. Marietta Street usually stays moving.

Well since football is controlling the Deck now, they are only selling the parking as a season package, and with the end of East Lots and the surface lot above I’m sure that it will be full. There won’t be very many opposing fans parking there.

This is the first I've heard of the IC lawn being out of commission for the season and it's really disappointing. I hope they open up Tech Green for normal tailgates instead of using it exclusively for the prepaid tailgating business. It's a bit of a walk from any parking but we are starving for green tailgating spaces.
