Note to self - don't book a Marriott

I work in this industry and I'm pretty confident the issue was the hotel didn't update their blackout dates. Thus, the default pricing applied. When there are big events like this that create situations where hotels want to change the default pricing algorithm, they have to make sure they do this. It seems pretty clear they didn't.

The other scenario is that they did and there was a system issue with Marriott. However, if that were the case, I would think corporate would likely advise the hotel to honor the rates and then pay the hotel franchise owner the difference in lost revenue. Writing a $50k check is better than something possibly going viral and creating image issues.

Small hotels like this typically have VERY high turnover rates and counting on the hotel employees to know how to perform even basic functions is a struggle. It turns out paying the dude at the front desk $10 an hour doesn't lead to loyal, responsible and capable employees.

Understand. Am just saying they will probably still have the rooms sold, or sold out, at the prices of those overbooked.

Would be shocking if the cost of doing business was not considered to start with.

Whatever, just the one writers opinion and I have no skin in the situation.
You're forgetting budgeting. You almost plan your entire yearlys on the football dates. If you get 100,000 instead of 1,000,000 you are screwed, because you planned the whole years budget on getting a million. Compared to a simple Tuesday when you already know the rate will be low.

If you planned, you would've filled out the blackout dates correctly.

Yes. Operator signed an agreement with Marriott. You think McDonald's would let an operator soil its name? Chick Fil A? Nope. They'd drop the hammer
They can make them drop the name, but they don't necessarily share the same rules just because they pay to put the name on the sign. I can almost guarantee Marriott corporate will have little to no say in this.

Almost? They are using Marriott's name and booking program. What do you think, the operator signed a one page agreement allowing him to use a Marriott sign without rules to abide by?

The flags need that property as much or more than the property needs the flag.

There are rules and there are more exceptions to them than you can possibly know.

Desired revenue= $700/night
booked rate= $70/night
add in a mandatory destination fee= $630/night

Problem solved.
