Per Kelly Q :

"For those counting at home, Gentry Bonds, Jarett Cole, Xavier Gantt and Boe Tufele are no longer on the #GaTech football team."

Not a transfer but roster news.

Tufele is worrisome- and the amount of DBs leaving is a little worrisome as well. I hope this means the ones we signed or are comnitted are better

We have no problems at DB

  • Tufele has battled injury almost his entire time at Tech... he is likely to get a medical.
  • Gantt was a RB that got moved to slot and apparently wasn't a good fit.
  • Bonds was highly rated in HS, but has seen little playing time to date. He possibly could've competed for some playing time this season, but it sounds like he hasn't developed into his estimated potential. He's also been hurt so could be medical there too.
  • Cole was another DB that saw little action and was being passed on the depth charts by younger guys.
I don't see anything worrisome about any of it, and frankly we needed the room for next years class.

Well we knew it was necessary and that it was coming. Of these, I only had Gantt pegged to not be here.

As long as we treat our kids with honesty, integrity and fairness I have no problem with the attrition. Let kids know that if they accept a scholarship but do not progress as a player they will be helped to find a better fit for their football career. This happens all over college football. Scholarships are renewable for a reason. You cannot compete with fifteen or twenty of your 85 total upper classmen who are non-contributors.

Including the part about the ones we signed being better? I'm certainly no expert on this, and value your input.
We have had attrition, for various reasons, for years. And IMHO, if you can't see the field or crack the 2-deep on a team with the level of talent we have had for the last three years, then, yes, incoming recruits are potentially better than you are.

The guys leaving are not guys the staff is trying to keep. We are stacked and getting more stacked at DB. OL is thin, but if the staff thought Tufele was going to contribute, he'd still be here. Best of luck to them all.

The only players who have left that the staff would probably like to have are Braun and Benson. Even with Benson, we have so much running back depth that they probably aren't too concerned.

Football roster has been updated on rr.com with the latest departures and new pics/numbers for everybody:

https://ramblinwreck.com/sports/m-footbl/roster/

Noteworthy:

Jalen Camp to #1
James Graham to #4 (assuming here this means he earned it back and will be eligible)
Antonneous Clayton #7 (single digit usually has to be earned so this is a good sign)
Ahmarean Brown #10
Marquez Ezzard #11
Myles Sims #16
Jamious Griffin #22 (second coming of deuce-deuce?)
Jordan Mason #27
Tony Amerson #45
Cornelius Evans #47

Being worried about Tufele and DBs leaving

Immediately after CGC was brought on, it was about 10 guys that immediately popped into mind that would be go bc they didn’t fit and Boe was one of them. TBH, I’am not sure if he was fit for CPJ system either.

DB is the last place we should be worried about attrition. Bonds was injured day one he stepped on campus and hasn’t been the same guy since from my understanding.

I wish them all well

What is your take on the guys who signed as well as next year’s commits?

1. Had high hopes for Bonds. A 4-star signee, per rivals.com. Going by 247sports.com, we beat out Clemson, Nebraska and Tennessee for Bonds.
2. Boe's name had come up before as someone who might not stay. Hate that injuries kept him from doing, well, apparently much of anything.
3. Cole had his moments and losing him hurts depth at CB. We're pretty solid at safety, even with Bonds leaving.
4. Gantt was a high 3-star who never seemed to be able to break through into the rotation.

Surprising that some of this is happening so late in the process, particularly with Bonds and Gantt. If the prospects for PT looked bleak after spring, you'd have thought they would have entered the transfer portal a little sooner. It's a little late in the game to find a new landing spot, unless they had been working quietly to secure one.

So where does this put the program, in terms of available/over the limit, on 85 scholarships?

82

That puts Tech at 10 departed players but that still is not as high as the 2010 season (16), 2016 (15) or 2014 (13) seasons for attrition. Those new departures put Tech at 82 scholarships with the ability to sign 16 without further attrition. Coach Collins is clearly aiming to 20-plus in the 2020 recruiting cycle so there will be further attrition.
