36. Georgia Tech

53.1 | 3 national titles

"From 1904 through 1966, Georgia Tech employed only three coaches, each of whom won at least 100 games and ended up in the College Football Hall of Fame. After John Heisman, Bill Alexander and Bobby Dodd, which is also after Tech left the SEC in 1964, the Ramblin' Wreck's fortunes have been more wreck than ramblin'. Bobby Ross won a share of the 1991 national title, and under George O'Leary, Georgia Tech made Florida State sweat to win the ACC in the late 1990s. Now it's Geoff Collins' turn to live up to a storied legacy."

Other than we have 4 national titles, not a bad write up considering it was probably limited to a paragraph

In the writers defense, the game was played in 1991,
Most games deciding nattys are played in the year after the season where the natty is awarded. This shouldn't be that difficult to understand for a sports journalist.

I am outraged that UCF is not in the Top 50 with their 1 fake title

I'm nitpicking but it's 4 Natty's, not 3.
A lot of nay-sayers do not count our 1953 natty. It’s bull öööö because the team was undefeated and scored a hella lot of points but they gave it to Michigan cause media is/was bias.

Why is our 1990 title always pitched as us barely stealing a share and not Colorado being the beneficiary of massive media bias?

I think I just answered my own question...
Plus Colorado's final game was invalid since they got the 5th down.

And they lost a game to the team that Clemson beat. We beat Clemson
And the phantom clipping call.
Their title should have "dead QB sympathy trophy" on it

Was 1952 and Michigan State. Definitely BS. We were 12-0 with wins over 3 ranked teams. They were 9-0 with no wins over ranked teams. Things were weird back then, I guess.

Thank you for the correction. I was 50/50 on if it was Michigan state or Michigan but I def thought it was 53.

I’ve had a uGa fan once say to me that we had 2.5 national championships because they didn’t count 52 and because of the 1990 split. He had been to almost every dwag game in the last 12 years. Which means he saw 2nd and 26 in person.

Very annoying when fans want to bring up split titles as a negative when that is actually how they did things back then. And we have solid arguments for both 1952 and 1990 that we should have been unanimous. Wonder why Mich. St. didn't even play a bowl game in 1952? Did they decline out of fear of losing the natty? Yeah, things were weird back then.

Uga has 1 then. They went back and retroactively claimed their ancient title.

Wait. Both of their claimed titles are ancient.

Mich St was #1 in the AP pre-season poll and never lost a game. Back in the era of uneven schedules, you can kinda see how the weaker resume team ended up on top.

Yeah, plus AP writers who probably didn't follow all the teams closely or actually even see the games.
