Been hearing some rumblings of some very good articles lately. Does anybody subscribe to The Athletic, is it good? Is it interesting? Do you get access to other sports/teams/etc?

It's pretty good. I've had it for over a year now. Good if you can get one of their subscription deals. Tori McElhaney is the GT beat writer... she's much more of a journalist writing interest pieces rather than just a beat reporter. She writes nice articles if not super in-depth on Xs and Os. She also routinely asks good questions in the pressers.

David Obrien and Jeff Schultz left the AJC and write for The Atletic now covering the Braves. Schultz is still a douche but DOB still does pretty good work as a beat writer. They have solid overall baseball coverage with they likes of Peter Gammons, Ken Rosenthal, and Jayson Stark.

I subscribe to it and really enjoy it. Some really in depth pieces that don’t have the constant digs/spelling errors like in the AJC. Also, if you play FF, the camp reports can help give you a leg up on your league mates.

When there are so many outlets providing free information/articles/depth charts/interviews/videos, I would never be able to pay for some wall-text subscription. Not when I can get the bullet points on here. I get it though, if this dwag is as good as y'all make her out to be covering GT. Extremely antithetical for StingTalk though.

You're right. I spend all of my time only reading articles from GT journalism grads. I've freed up a lot of time by doing that.

I’ve been a subscriber for ~1 month now. Tori provides great coverage that hits on the cultural and player side of things moreso than the overly played X’s and O’s transition. I enjoy reading the articles (beyond Tech also), and personally think it’s worth supporting with a subscription. Good journalism is hard to come by these days, and it’s something I don’t want to see fade away entirely.

I would never pay for “premium” sports content. Especially news about my team. Everything that is written about will be public knowledge within hours or days anyway. I should pay $10-$15/mo to be one of the first to know? No thanks.

Am I supposed to be impressed? Tori does a great job of getting insights from inside the program that I haven’t seen elsewhere. If you don’t want that feel free to abstain.

You may be confusing the Athletic with jacketsonline. There is no aspect of “first to know” or “insider knowledge” here - just good journalism about the program. That said, I have learned things about the team I haven’t seen elsewhere, but that’s just icing on the cake.

FWIW, if you find a promotion it’s more in the range of $20-$30 for the first year. After that I think it’s ~$60/yr if I remember correctly.

Not even close. Now, The Athletic isn't really breaking any news, just reporting interesting things. But I see very little of what is in those pieces posted here.

The Rivals page that everyone loves to hate has approximately 50x the info as Stingtalk and much of that info also never gets posted. I could certainly live without it, and would have cancelled if they hadn't given me a few free months and then a really good deal on a sub. But the difference in program info you'll get from reading The Athletic and Jackets Online versus only reading AJC and Stingtalk is night and day.

It's not worth it to plenty of people, myself included typically. But the info is there.

When you are dealing with establishment Atlanta media, that public knowledge of what happens with Georgia Tech within "hours or days" could stretch into "months, years, or ever."

Now if you want to mooch and wait until copyrighted work product is stolen and reprinted online for no charge to you, that's your biz.

I think it's good to support outlets that are giving us good coverage. Ken S. tries, but his work has been slipping for years, IMO, whether that is because of him or the AJC itself. As for Tori, by all accounts she does a great job. I fear she will get offered the dwag beat in a couple years, though, at which point she will be dead to all of us.

Pretty good look.

You people better get your act together. I'm embarrassed tbqh. There have been some solid posts here recently, and a few flashes of the brilliance we are going to need this season, but this is just basic. We can not slack off on the fundamentals.
