Mark Bradley, amongst others, ually Dwag fans, has drawn a comparison between Geoff Collins and Butch Jones.

Am I missing something?

Coach Collins is certainly unconventional and eccentric (like 70% of the Tech grads I know) but he does come across as a man with a vision and a method.

Butch Jones was borderline mentally retarded.

So am I missing something? Or are these just retarded Dwag fans?

There are some things about Collins that are already a bit annoying. The whole above the line thing and no depth chart is really stupid. But if that’s what the kids are digging these days then who am I to judge.

Even if Collins isn’t ultimately the coach we need, he’ll hopefully leave a much more talented roster than what he inherited. That’d make life much easier for the next coach.

And if Collins can’t recruit, then we’re pretty much ööööed. Because then I’m not sure if anyone could.

other than maybe D line, he inherited a pretty good roster. Even CGC has noted how much of an elite athlete Tobias is, much less Juanyeh, and they have raved about Peje, Jaytlin Askew and Demetrius Knight, who was a PJ recruit.
If everybody had stayed (Parker Braun, Gentry Bonds, for instance), it would look a lot better. With both Swillings, Jaylon King, Kaleb Oliver, Graham, Graham and Yates (who was upgraded to a 4) and Justice Dingle (a 4 star by rivals), CGC inherited just about the same amount of 4s as PJ did. Plus, our number of 2 stars was on the decline. It was more solid 3 stars than it had been. Not that star ratings ever mattered to PJ. Because they did not. Recruiting mattered to him. Recruiting rankings did not.
If CGC can keep that going and make it as good as he predicts and push the trend line even further upward, then so much the better. Especially if he can get some D linemen in. Gotta have those.
It's also a very young roster.

It's a lazy take based off some physical similarities, unconventional (sometimes gimmicky) methods, and recruiting.

Butch Jones had virtually no P5 coaching experience prior to getting the Tennessee job, and he was hired after all the attractive names they went after turned them down. He followed Brian Kelly at Central Michigan and Cincinnati and did decent at both places, but it was not a big time hire for Tennessee.

Nobody, including us, really knows jack at this point other than the fact that we’re now 67 hrs 21 minutes away from kickoff. And I can’t sleep. Also ACCN is showing the 2009 ACCCG rn.

He had no connections AT ALL in the south when Jones was hired at Tennessee. There is no similarities between Jones and Collins other than perhaps a shaved head.

That is a hot sports opinion right there.

I think Collins has also started with a better staff than Jones did. Our main coordinators still have something to prove at this level, but the position coaching hires and especially Brent Key are home runs. The support and strength staff is elite.

I hope Collins is self aware enough to always be subtly adjusting his branding and catch phrases. He is already starting to sound monotonous and repeats the same mantra over and over again in every interview. The more you say it, the more it sounds rehearsed. "It is what it is" became a great meme, and we are going to have so many Collins memes to vent our frustrations that we won't even know where to begin.
