Ok, so that sucked. But that’s literally a nightmare scheduling scenario for Collins in game 1, and not something he can control. Clemson, to a man, is bigger and faster and stronger and has been since 2014 – or even before that.

In 2008, CPJ threw together a best-case-scenario season, obviously highlighted by the UGA win but including some other big ones as well. But guess what? Even that team got steamrolled by LSU in the bowl game. We just couldn’t hang. That’s the same thing that happened here, but this Clemson team is much better than that LSU team, and we unfortunately had to play them first. There’s hope, even for this year. Can’t let it set the tone.

There was no realistic way a prior unranked team with the 3rd fewest returning seniors in FBS was going to hang with a #1 Clemson team that completely dominated Bama in the NC last year in the opening game. Everyone here should have realized that.

And that's before you even touch the coaching change. It was an obviously hopeless game weeks ago. Folks around here, as usual, lack perspective to a degree that's comical.

I knew we weren’t going to win or even come close to it. But what good does it do to scream that about on a message board? It’s also no fun unless you’re one of those who gets vindication out of always being right even when the thing that makes you right is like a kick in the nuts.

That is a common theme on this board; but reality is that Paul Johnson inherited a team that got blasted by LSU in year 1 and blasted again in year 2 by Iowa because the scheme wasn't enough to get past the talent deficit. Sure, CPJ inherited DThomas who was great; but reality is that JfN and Dwyer were not NFL caliber talent and benefited greatly by the scheme and how CPJ used them. While CGC's team got smashed last night in the debut, there is more talent on this team than this board is ready to admit; but I think it will be revealed as the season moves along hopefully starting next week.

and yet it was more talented than the team we have now by and large. We are good in the defensive backfield, small but decent at LB, good at RB and some good WRs. We have good athletes as QB but so far there is no evidence we have a good QB. I"m not saying these guys suck, but we are no where near the first team PJ had and especially nowhere close to being able to play Clemson

You should pump the brakes on your idea of "reality."

He inherited Baybay Thomas, Andrew Gardner, Josh Nesbitt, Roddy Jones, Jonathan Dwyer, Derrick Morgan, Michael Johnson, Darryl Richard, Vance Walker, Morgan Burnett, and Mario Butler. That's only a few of the names.

That team did as well as it did despite scheme, not because of it. Many of the above players did become pros, but others failed to develop into pros because of your beloved scheme, not because of limited native ability.

It's okay to like the former coach. It is not okay to let it blind you.

Clemson actually had relatively few field-long marches. We either gifted them the ball in the red zone, or they scored on long plays. Perhaps they could have death-marched us more (who knows?) but looking for a silver lining there, I'd say neither of those things is likely to happen quite as much against less talented teams or after the nerves wear off for us.

On offense... let's get vertical. Obvs OL is a place of concern, but I think we've got enough talent in the ball-handling positions to turn into a workably good offense.

We had 18 pass attempts and 45 rushing attempts. So we had 71-29 run/pass ratio, which is slightly more pass happy than Paul's typical 80-20 ratio but still is pretty run heavy. We also didn't run much hurry up last night so we ate a decent amount of clock. So yeah, not buying it. Clemson had 16 possessions, which is higher than the typical 12 or so teams used to get, but that happens when you have four turnovers.

Oh yeah, Clemson's 8.4 yards per carry last night was higher than every opponent during Paul's tenure, except for Clemson's 9.4 ypc in the 2009 ACC title game. So Geoff barely missed eclipsing his predecessor on that stat as well.

That team had 4 future NFL DLs, 1 future NFL OL, 3 guys in the secondary went on to make at least 1 NFL Team, Dwyer had take it to the house Speed vs any Top10 team
