Watching the game was bad enough, but until now, I hadn't compared game statistics.

I think @BeeStorm or someone pointed out that Citadel wasn't able to practice all week for Elon due to the hurricane evac. Not sure if that could really be considered a factor though.

Some more numbers vs the Citadel defense:

Total plays while Johnson at QB: 23
Total plays while Oliver at QB: 22

Average yards per play while Johnson at QB: 4.7
Average yards per play while Oliver at QB: 8.9

Explosive plays (12 yard run or 18 yard pass) while Johnson at QB: 2 pass (33 and 28 yards), 1 run (12 yards by J Howard)
Explosive plays (12 yard run or 18 yard pass) while Oliver at QB: 1 pass (29 yards), 6 run (3 by J Mason, 3 by T Oliver)

Zero yard & negative plays while Johnson at QB: 11
Zero yard & negative plays while Oliver at QB: 3

Plays of 3 yards or more, excluding explosive plays - Johnson: 7 (4 runs by Johnson, 3 passes - Camp, Brown, Mason)

Johnson ran or was sacked on 7 of his 23 plays.

So, this tells me that when Tobias Oliver is in, its the Oliver show. Not really a strategic offense, even though it moves the ball vs weaker opponents. There was a shot of Patenaude during a late drive when T Oliver is in and he's kicked back in his chair. IMO, this is why we will not see a large percentage of snaps with a Tobias Oliver led offense. If they didn't install much for him in the Spring and Fall camp, I don't see us squeezing in a lot before Temple or during the season.

Throw in the two kickoff returns that set up the offense and Tobias Oliver showed that he is a tremendous athlete against the Citadel. I think his impact gets diminished against better teams, but we'll see how it goes during ACC play.
 
You hit the nail on the head when u said they didn’t install much for him. Its obvious and disappointing. With his running ability there is so much we can so off that with a simpler but solid passing scheme.

They seem to have been more invested on ways to get 2-3 qbs on the field at once than saying hey he is by far the best runner, lets design off that with a heavy spread option attack, screen plays, rpos, rollout passes, etc. we see little to none really.

Then, u go up tempo on first down with 3-4 automatic calls based on d alignment or numbers and snap immediately. By god. Where is that
 
It was obvious to me (way before the season started) we were gonna need our QB to be a runner.

This OC guy is a moron. I’m convinced of it. I’m all for Coach Collins and his staff but the offensive strategy is remarkably stupid. All of us knew the OL was gonna be awful. You have to put in the most elusive players behind center.
 
I guess for the rest of eternity we can just wallow in jeers / tears / candy / nuts and buts.

This is, in my lifetime, the 10th H.C. change for GT football.

In all honesty, when EVERY aspect of the program is considered, I have seen at least 2 (if not 3) of our new H.C. start off worse. And that is to mean and include more than just the final score of 3 lousy games. NONE have received this type of irrational crap by some.

There is nothing to say to those who are this irrational after about 185 minutes of football.

They can not even take the necessary first step of analyzing our roster and the reasons for it.

Wow, those are eye-opening and depressing.

Of Johnson's 23 snaps, 13 were for negative to three yards, and 10 were for three yards or more.
Of Oliver's 22 snaps, 7 were for negative to three yards, and 15 were for three yards or more.

(a) That seems like another data point in favor of 'starting' Oliver (or whatever the Juice Crew wants to call it).
(b) I wonder how 20/45 snaps being for negative to three yards compares to other 'pro style' offenses? Seems pretty bad to me, but I'm not sure if I'm still living in a 3O fever dream

Considering 40% of passes are incomplete. Assuming 50% run to pass ratio, that is 20% to start. Then how many passes lead to sacks or 0-3 yard gain? Let’s say 15%. That’s another 7.5%. So what percent of runs go for 3 yds or less? I’d guess close to 50% unless you have a beast OL. That’s another 25%. So around 50% of plays would seem to go for 3 or less yards.

Fill in with your own assumptions, but it doesn’t seem very bad. The issue to me is that on 3rd and long we still suck. Just like most of the past decade, on 3rd and 8, we have little to no shot.

The coaching staff knows that Oliver is a stud athlete, that’s why he returns kickoffs. But, I am giving up on him getting 75%+ of the snaps at QB. This is year 2, offense 2, coaching staff 2 where the offense moves when he is in while not being the ‘starter’. He must have some issues that prevent him from being handed the reigns. I do think that if he was at QB more often his effectiveness would decrease. Just tough to watch this team lose to Citadel knowing Mason and Oliver looked like men among boys out there.

I think this year will be infinitely frustrating on offense. Hopefully the defense can stay mentally tough as they are the key to us stealing any wins we can scrape together. P Harvin’s ability to generate turnovers as well.
