#23 Emmanuel Johnson

Wiggles appears gone, regardless. getting Illinois crystal balls.
My crystal ball says he’ll go to Illinois, play for a year and get homesick, and then enter the transfer portal and probably end up somewhere that really pisses us all off. I really want the guy, but he was drama from the start with the video that teased Tennessee.

Thing is, I could see him flipping to a big SEC school. Illinois is so random that I wonder if it was totally in his hands. Good thing is we dont have to stress over individual recruits now.

Rivals isn’t showing that he has a Tennessee offer. Indicates that they aren’t really evaluating him.

Edit - Rivals also has Ivey as a 3 star.

I mean we can debate what EJs rating should be based on film which I’m down to do, but we just replaced an established 5.7 with an unknown 5.4 and you’re on here saying literally the exact opposite.

It’s a good day. Ivey is a big win. And Sims looks like he’s in play. We’ve had a lot of good news today. You don’t have to make öööö up.

I did not say equal. I said comparable. If the Wiggles stuff is true, it looks like our staff had a plan and immediately went to it to get a guy with good measurable. Of course he wouldn’t be as highly rated as our plan A.

My point is that it beats the hell out of losing a DE commit and then getting a 2 star athlete (a back) from an AAC school (or worse).

Again, 5.4 is a 2 star. If you’re arguing that he’s a 3* on 247, show me one case ever where we replaced a 3* 247 commit with a 2* 247 commit. Don’t think they even have 2* on 247.

For starters, Johnson isn't a replacement for Wiggles. So we're not replacing a 5.7 with a 5.4. We're probably going after another DE body type if I had to guess. So as of now, Ivey is Wiggles replacement (if he is 100% gone). We're recruiting him at DT, and he's from the SC low country area where players are notoriously underrated.

IIWII. Let’s not dump on the guy who is fully committed to attending GT. Plus we don’t know the full story on Wiggles. This certainly signals he is gone, but I haven’t lost hope.

I have no problem taking a couple under the radar guys each class. Adding one low-rated recruit isn't a reflection on the overall recruiting. The coaches must've seen something they liked. The guy has a good frame and is athletic. I doubt they are counting on him from playing from day one, but with a few years of S&C and coaching, this guy could be a player.

Now if this was the norm and we weren't winning with big-time recruits then I'd be concerned, but things are trending up. For us to fill a spot with this guy given what else we still have on the table indicates they believe in his potential.

Exactly. And we are in a position right now where we technically have no scholarships to give so the staff would only offer if they know he is a step above our BTL players. Same with the Metter linebacker.

His mom was a basketball player at UGA and played on three USA Olympic basketball teams, winning two gold medals. His grandfather also played in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts. His mom apparently raised him to focus on academics and he went to a private school until he transferred to Fort Dorchester for the past 2 years.

Gotta love this from his coach:
Johnson began his prep career at Northwood Academy before transferring to Fort Dorchester two years ago. Fort Dorchester head coach Steve LaPrad, who has two former defensive ends (Carlos Dunlap and Robert Quinn) playing in the NFL, knows a prospect when he sees one. He says Johnson has that potential.

“I’ll be honest, when he came here he didn’t know anything, but he was a really good-looking athlete,” LaPrad said. “He has come a long way. I mean, he’s a beast, a man among boys. His best football is ahead of him. In two years, he will be one of the best in the country. Some school is going to get a good one.

Great post thanks for digging up some good vibes. Hey, if you're going to take 'chances' let's do it with 6'5 monsters instead of 5'9 ABs.

In full agreement with this. I took exception to the original “at least we’re not backfilling a 3* decommit with a 2* anymore” comment. Because that’s exactly what we did. Some of those late additions have turned out pretty solid in the past too. Other than DT, there’s not much to complain about with this class at all. Pass rush especially had been addressed BIG time with Ivey/Wright.

Emmanuel Johnson is a kid who I think may very well end up at DT. 6'5" and 256 as a high school player.

When he comes here and starts working out with our S&C program, he'll likely go to 265 or 270 just by transforming fat to muscle. Considering he also has the frame to put on an additional 20 - 25 pounds over that and carry it, he could very easily become an interior lineman.

Again, Johnson is not filling Wiggles de-commitment spot.

Possible. Still doesn’t give us immediate help there though. Which is what we needed to address. But again we’ve knocked it out of the park at DE/OLB/RB/DB. So it’s still a net positive.

Again filling a spot doesn’t mean it’s at the same position. And I’m not even the one who used that phrase to begin with. I was responding to the poster who used that phrase.
