Plenty of other majors now e.g. daughter is looking at GT for international relations, policy.
If that is what she wants to do I hope she does and it works out great for her, but from the school's perspective good God why?

Georgetown and the other "in" schools in the NE have been providing the govt bureaucracy for decades, why the Hell does an engineering school in GA need to start?

Higher Ed is more of a scam every year

That debate occurred 32 years ago, definitely a dead horse now, long since been a given that GT will continue to broaden a bit and hopefully attract more women. GT loses engineering faculty to CMU which happens to also have a top ranked music and drama school. Offering more than business as a realistic major for most athletes helps as well.
Broadening the school didn’t even cause the political storm around Crecine - that came from demoting the business school into Ivan Allen (later reversed). I almost skipped GT to do a double major engineering/music at Northwestern. Engineering is a great start in life, but generalists tend to do better in the long run.

Georgia Tech's International Relations degree offers a perspective the other schools don't:

Welcome | Sam Nunn School of International Affairs (gatech.edu)

"The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs is dedicated to creating the next generation of policy makers that tackle real world issues facing our world today. As one of the first professional schools of international affairs at a major technological institution, we provide unique and flexible programs that combine international affairs with science and technology."

The only thing that matters is who wins. All of the rest of this is just BS. uga won a bowl game while we sit at home yet again with a 3 win season.

Cincy players are obviously not the caliber of Ugay's backups. But if they had just run the ball on 3rd down and 2 with 1:30 to go they could have ran off half of the clock as UGay was out of time outs. Ugay would have had to hit a hail Mary to have pulled off the field goal then.

I mean recruiting isn’t an exact science or particularly accurate over small sample sizes where there is large variation. But it tends to be a decent indicator over large sample sizes.

Meaning Cinci happens to be good this year after mediocre (relative to 130 FBS teams) recruiting. But how good was the average team that recruited in Cinci’s neighborhood?

There will always be a random mix of solid coaching + solid scouting at one of the G5 schools as well as a random mix of poor coaching + bad scouting at one of the factories. Silly to use those statistical inevitabilities to assess your own team.

Strength of Schedule in 2020
Georgia Tech: 2nd of 130
Cincinnati: 63rd of 130

Admittedly it's a preseason ranking, otherwise Ohio State should be near the bottom having only played 5 games. But the point stands. There's no comparison. That level of recruiting class at Cincinnati is enough to get you 10-win seasons when you're in a conference with Wichita State. We're aiming for a higher bar.

I expected to see a bunch of NFL draft picks (late roundish) out of cincy but I was surprised they dont look much different than GT in that regard. However, you can actually see a significant drop off from GT in 2017 to 2020 with our only pick a grad transfer TE that wouldnt have come here if we were still running the TO offense. It does appear that coaching is elevating Cincy relative to their talent level.

If you’re not one of the factories, you’d better be good at identifying talent and coaching once you get them.

This is an old canard. It is not 1980 anymore. There are a ZILLION non engineering and non science majors available at Tech these days.
And they are all BScience programs. The non-football entering freshmen credentials tell ya a lot about the level of academics today. Kinda like the school Prez said in the 60s when we withdrew from the sec, wtte: Nobody is attempting to do what GT is in major college football....nobody. It's even more true some 50+ years later. Yes, we have "exceptions", without which we would have the football tradition of RICE. Prob is, for every 1 exception we have, the perennial powers have many many more, and or places to hide em. CFB has certainly changed a great deal, but alas, a lot has remained the same. The dominant by far, make-up of D-1 CFB players, has not closed the gap academically to match the academic gap of GT today vs GT of yesteryear. Add in the all important $ factor, and the GT Prez of yesteryear, is right on the mark.

Look, fact is, we are unique. Can we still be occasionally exceptional---of course we can, it's been proven. We should be comfortable in our own skin, and not give a rat's arse about uga, except to beat em a bit more than we have in a long time---now THAT would make me more comfortable in our own skin!

I think it’s time that the “places of higher learning“ whose primary purposes are to run minor league NFL teams under the disguise of “college” to break away. Most of the players on those teams have zero interest in obtaining a college education. They are only as a steppingstone to go to the NFL. The only reason most of them stay there three years is because of the players union in the NFL which makes them stay three years. So go ahead and pay them tens and thousands of dollars per year. Let them sign sponsorships with Nike and whatever companies will pay them even more. I will not miss watching Clemson, Bama, Georgia, Auburn, LSU or Ohio State play.

They play on a completely different playing field than Georgia Tech does anyway. They don’t have nearly the academic qualifications and I truly believe the NCAA allows them to get away with recruiting violations that Georgia Tech and Ole Miss would never get away with.
