There is no reason to poop my posts because Im not bipolar where after every loss every coach should be fired and after every big win we are going to the ACC championship. Its never as good or bad as it seems. We have plenty of warts. This game was an outlier with a 77% completion rate for Sims. Outstanding, but on just 112 yards passing with a long of 28. Why would I expect that to continue and not the 55% rate of last year? Are there no more 44% completion rate eggs like NIU headed our way? Who knows for sure? Can we consistently beat teams with under 200 yards passing? With a 2:1 run pass ratio?

Obviously I want Sims to be great. He can be. I dont want to argue with you bipolar folks. So I will say I'll be happy when I see Sims dropping deep balls in over the shoulder in stride like the UNC QB can do. At that point his big arm will make him a deep threat. Until then, see if teams dont move up and test his deep touch out. They would be crazy not to.

As to the two back set it makes sense. Hard for the D to adjust to unless all your LB are fast enough to cover either or both when they go out.

While I think your criticism of Sims is fair based on what we saw last year and against NIU, I thought he was fantastic last night. I specifically thought it was the most touch I had ever seen him put on the ball on his deep throws, while still gunning it into tight windows a couple of times when he needed to.

Mack Brown called him Vince Young after the game. Coming from the guy who actually coached Vince Young, I think that means a lot. Jeff Sims still has to become a lot more consistent before we start crowning him, but the potential is obvious. So is the improvement from Week 1 to today. Considering that he’s still technically a freshman, I’m extremely excited to see what his GT career holds.
 
Two backs is great. I would like to see three backs at times with Gibbs or Smith in the slot. We need to have our best players on the field as much as possible.

I didn't realize quite how fast Sims is. On a couple of those long runs he was gliding away from people, very Vince Young esque. We can only hope he trends in that direction (until he gets to the nfl)

Vince's natural ability carried him in college. When he got to the NFL his mental limitations were accentuated. He has the lowest Wonderlic score ever recorded for a QB. Sims is much smarter than Young fortunately.

Yes , you make a good point

I hope this doesn't mask the lack of productivity from our TE position, down the line vs better opposition, we will need some easy completions in Key situations

We have to get more from our TEs in the passing Game

Did it ever occur to you that VY just had bad throwing fundamentals , bad arm angle etc, and that was the reason that his NFL Career had a ceiling on it , I'm guessing that his "Wonderlic Score" couldn't have been lower than Brett Favre's (aka Buckhead Brett)

Despite all of his "mental limitations" he was able to lead an NFL to the Playoffs, compare that to all the combine commandos that aced the wonderlic that couldn't make it thru Training Camp and the Pre-season

Throwing fundamentals and accuracy are the most important things for a QB, wonderlic scores and all that crap is just stuff that announcers talk about to fill air time on draft night

And I mostly agree with you as well. But he threw for 112 and his long was 28. What deep throws?

Mack Brown after the game has an incentive to compliment the guy who torched his team. I did not watch VY that much.

There is great optimism here, and some who are still high and wearing rose colored glasses. Im optimistic as well, like I was after FSU since which GT starting Sims has won, what, 3 games out of 12?

We will see. I hope we win out. We are finally making strides as a team. We are big and fast and look the part of a contender. We are making less of the "youth" mistakes that plagued our losses. The trajectory is great. But so far under CGC its usually two steps forward one step back. I expect more growing pains.

Don't throw him under the bus when he does and keep Yates fresh with plenty of practice with the #1 unit and a series or two each game.
 
Good teams always play to their strengths. GT clearly has a stable of really good RBs, plus Sims can run it well too. As long as the line can block, run the ball, pass when it makes sense and ride the wave.

I don't think NIU was a lapse for Sims. Considering how the team played I'd put my money on practice not being at game speed or intensity during the offseason
 
I think Sims has happy feet and doesn't always make the check downs. For the early games, Yates' ability to do that is what we needed based on how the opponent played. For UNC, we needed a strong run game with little hesitation. Yates didn't seem as sharp, so I think the decision to pull was right, but I'm not sure that Sims has turned into a heisman qb overnight. I hope they both continue to grow as they bring different strengths.
