OC replacement

I said it was a potential solution. I did not advocate for that solution. We need to do something because the current structure is not working.
Coach Key needs to be evaluated by his entire body of work. The opinions of Coach Saban and Coach O'Leary carry some weight.
I wonder how much of Coach Key's time goes to coaching the offensive line? Is he being distracted by his other duties? Would we be better off hiring a full time OL coach?

Fair enough. I agree the ambiguity of what exactly Keys work is and how it's split up (and who he reports to) is very connected to a lot of the debates on here.

Against Pitt Sims had 359 yds passing and 60 yds rushing before subtracting Sack yardage.

Is PNode that bad if be found a way for our "embattled QB" to put up 420 yds of Total Off in a Game where the OLine had a horrible Day?

Doesn't seem like he's that bad of a playcaller if he could get more consistent Play from the OLine.
When your QB has over 400 yards of offense and your running backs have net negative yards, something is very wrong.

Other the Citadel. who should we have realistically beaten after our win based on the schedule?
That's not a great question. If we had won the game before our win, it still would have been two in a row. You mentioned Citadel, but the Miami game was bracketed by Duke and Pitt (both should be winnable). Syracuse preceded the Louisville win the next year and NC State was winnable after our Duke win. And we had a winless-forever NIU before KSU. Sadly, there are very few wins to even make this analysis.

I would like to get some experienced coordinators that have been there and done that. Maybe a couple of older guys that want to make this their last stop.
Someone that can immediately see the weaknesses of the other team and how to exploit that. Don’t have to recruit, just coach. Leave the recruiting to the younger guys.

The prior coach used to say "good teams don't lose twice in a row." We haven't won twice in a row....

And we haven't lost 2 in a row yet.

At this same point in the season in 2018 we had the same exact overall record, 2-3. Worse conference record, 0-2, and had just ended a 3 game losing steak with a win over mighty bowling Green

Well if CGC doesn't last we at least have an easy transition to the Coach Key era. He is, "a Tech guy" and also the most qualified assistant coach in the nation.

Too bad this board has spent the last 4 days trashing him for his units performance

Correct!

Something is very wrong with the OLine, but not with the OC.

IMHO, if our OC can scheme our QB to a 400 yd day passing & running vs an above .500 Conference Foe, then he's a decent OC.

We have OLine issues , with some minor OC issues mixed in.

Running our backs into the teeth of Pitt's DL in the first quarter made sense. But made no sense at any point after that. Yet we continued to do so.

Lots of yards with not many points on the board does not make a great OC. It often means you got blown out and had a ton of possession with little scoring to show for it.

Although their offense is WAY DOWN this year, Clemson still has a great defense, probably better than Pitt's, and yet we didn't get negative rushing yards that day. So there seem to be 3 options, the OC didn't call productive running plays against Pitt, the O-line coach didn't have his players ready, or the O-line players themselves didn't bother to show up. I think there was some of all 3 involved, but it still comes down to being the OC's responsibility to get it done.

There are other options, like
  • Pitt played a different style of defense more focused on run-stopping than Clemson did.
  • Our OL was bad due to injuries/new guys playing that hadn’t worked together before and were inexperienced.
  • Pitt having more game film on our 2021 offense than Clemson did.
The fact is there are a lot of variables and as laymen looking in from the outside, we don’t have all the info required to completely assess exactly what happened. Probably a little bit of everything we’ve been talking about, and probably not one thing that any given guy wants to assert that it is.

Pitt sold out to stop the run. Since we really like the RPO, we don’t usually have a quick pass option. Rewatching the 2nd pick, it was clear Pitt had 8 guys in run support. Seven of those guys rushed and the safety played right at the los to cover Gibbs if he came out for a pass (he did). Somebody was going to get through. We were able to move the ball passing until the field got compressed.

What I am saying is that there is a 4th option. The opposing coach had a good game plan. We aren’t good enough to force our running game when outnumbered.

Clemson did not face the same offense as Pitt. They schemed it differently. UNC schemed based on our O against Clemson. They didn’t respect the qb keep at all. Pitt schemed based on our UNC offense.

I'll buy that 4th option, but I still say that a good OC should be able to adjust in some manner to cover for it.

Theoretically, yeah. But ultimately, somebody has to lose the game. Maybe the OC could have made better choices (but we did move the ball effectively through the air, mostly). Maybe we just got outschemed or outmanned.

I’m leery of any of us armchair coaches that are TOO certain that we know exactly what the problem and the solution were.

I touted the Stats to the Guy that claimed the OC had a bad Game, our OC has to call plays with the OL we have now.

To claim the OC had a bad Game and not try to understand why, is beyond silly, these are same folks that didn't give him any credit for the UNC Game.

Looking at the Game , his schemes and playcalls are solid, we seem to have open players and scoring opportunities, we just happen to be weak in one critical area OLine.

You touted QB passing yardage stats in a thread discussing the OC. In the old schools days the OC couldn't point a finger at the OL and use it as an excuse because the OC was held accountable for the entire offense including the OL. You want us to look only at QB passing yardage and ignore interceptions, ignore RB stats, ignore red zone performance, and ignore the score.

You like to list off top 10 & 20 teams who would love to have Sims, why not list off the schools that want Pnope?

I don't have enough info to put out accurate info about PNode and if any other Teams would want him, I could see him being wanted at the G5 Level
