Volume is pretty close; though competition has been different:

Sims
50-80 Passing; 791 Yards; 6 TDs; 4 INTs; 9.9 YPA; 63% Completion
38 rushes for 255 Rushing; 4 TDs; 6.7 YPC

Yates
52-81 Passing; 613 Yards; 5 TDs; 1 INT; 7.5 YPA; 64% Completion
35 rushes for 43 Rushing Yards; 1 TD; 1.2 YPC

I think both guys give Tech a chance to succeed on O. Sims seems to have the most upside and his big plays demonstrate that. His picks are his biggest problem and some have involved some bad luck. More experience should help cure this also.

The backup QB is always the favorite player on the team. I have no qualms anytime Yates goes in. He has ability. Quality depth.

Right now, I look at Sims as the Matt Causey of Tech football. He can be really fun to watch but you have no idea if he’s just going to turn it over a ton and put you further behind. I give it to him that he didn’t get down and looked confident on that last drive.

Less than ideal comparison.

A PG in Basketball doesn't really rely on others for his plays to be sound and within reasonable fundamentals, his play is largely dependent on him.

A QB is fully reliant on his OLine & RBs to provide the necessary protection for him on passing plays, and some on running plays too.

Every FB Play on both sides of the ball requires 11 Players to execute as close to perfect as they can in order for that Play to have max production.

FB is so much more complex than "what play was called and what did the QB do"?

The positive is they both have time to get better. Sims definitely has a higher ceiling. We have to hope his decision making continues to improve. We have more quality QB's in the pipeline. Hopefully the young offensive lineman are ready soon.

This is so important and I'm surprised it isn't being brought up more. The stats are important, but so are intangibles. Yates, hand down, is just a smarter player than Sims. He doesn't get rattled and I think he gives us the best chance to win.

Sims, like others have said, has a higher ceiling, but until he stops making throws he knows he can't make, turning the bowl over, or *leading* the offense the way Yates was, then I think Yates should be starting.

Point blank, we don't win that game with Yates. Sorry to break whatever fantasy we're in here. Both picks had guys in the QB's face and were forced quick throws. One of them should've taken the sack, the other was a bad play by the receiver.
You mean we wouldn't have won throwing bubble screens and short swing passes? They are so accurate

Do the stats vs P5 only. I like Yates, but I don't think we can play the style of game we would need to win with him in there.
Sims vs FBS
50-80 Passing; 791 Yards; 6 TDs; 4 INTs; 9.9 YPA; 63% Completion
38 rushes for 255 Yards; 4 TDs; 6.7 YPC

Yates vs FBS
35-58 Passing; 359 Yards; 1 TD; 1 INT; 6.1 YPA; 60% Completion
28 rushes for 51 Yards; 1 TD; 1.8 YPC

Sims vs ACC
46-71 Passing; 768 Yards; 6 TDs; 4 INTs; 10.8 YPA; 65% Completion
32 rushes for 221 Yards; 4 TDs; 6.9 YPC

Yates vs ACC
23-40 Passing; 224 Yards; 0 TD; 1 INT; 5.6 YPA; 57% Completion
19 rushes for 24 Yards; 0 TD; 1.3 YPC

Maybe if we had an O Line worth a damn we could put Yates back there and let him game manage. But we don’t so Yates is not a viable option other than playing injury duty. And if our oline was worth a damn, that helps Sims too. So Yates still doesn’t get the call over Sims. IIWII.

Jeff Sims is a really good. Really young QB who is growing into his role. I’m not convinced he has supreme position coaching, but he seems to have improved this season over last. He is not Trevor Lawrence and hopefully that means he will be here for 4 (5?) years where we reap the rewards of steady improvement in a year or 2

These next 6 games are going to be a window into next season. I’d draw a line under this stat line and closely watch Sims 1st half vs 2nd half of season stats. If we see a step change up, next year will be much better, potentially 3 wins better. If he flat lines, well Houston we have a problem.

I like Yates stability, but he will not win games that are in that 30% win percentage category. He’ll manage effectively and win the games he should win, but he’ll also lose the games he should lose. With Sims right now as it stands, you’ll pull off the unexpected win but you’re also going to have to deal with the mistakes causing winnable games to become losers.

As I said above, Sims maturity will either show the next 6 games or it will not. We’d better hope for the best because this is the horse we’re going to be riding. We have nothing behind him except for a recruit that’s 2 more years away probably from being ready. Peery has disappeared & must be a bust because nobody’s talking abut him. That kid from Temple will only take a snap in an emergency. IIWII.
