Before the start of bowl practice, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said that he treats bowls as rewards. That included the way he ran practices — as normal game-week practices, not as a precursor to the heavy-duty work of spring practice.
Excellent.

Goes on to talk about how our previous coach treated bowl practice as a essentially an early spring training camp. In other words, he wasn't so much looking at how to win the bowl game, so much as getting prep time for the following year.

Johnson also shortened practice to about 90 minutes, where typical practices during the season ran about two hours. Further, while there is no limit to the number of practices that can be run to prepare for a bowl, the Jackets took two weeks off for final exams and will practice nine times.

True? Is their really no sanctioned limit on number of practices? I thought NCAA had them capped.

Maybe the bowl practice cap is a total time (like 20 hrs), but not a specific number of practices.

So you could shorten each individual practice, but get a greater number of total practices.

What is CPJ's post season record?

I think he was 3-2 as OC & Head Coach. He did not coach in last years Poinsettia Bowl, which Navy lost 35-32 to Utah.

Dec. 30, 2006 Meineke Bowl-Boston College 25, Navy 24
Dec. 22, 2005 Poinsettia Bowl-Navy 51, Colorado St. 30
Dec. 30, 2004 Emerald Bowl-Navy 34, New Mexico 19
Dec. 30, 2003 Houston Bowl-Texas Tech 38, Navy 14
Dec. 25, 1996 Aloha Bowl-Navy 42, California 38

I believe Chan wanted to win the bowl game, the same as Paul Johnson. He just had a different approach to bowl prep. Chan used part of the bowl practices to work the younger players and redshirts, but he still wanted to win the bowl game the same as PJ.

Not saying that he didn't want to win. Just saying that he wasn't 100% focused on it. Diverting attention to work with younger players and redshirts took focus away from the task at hand. IMNSHO.

From what I've read, it sounds like LSU is practicing a lot harder right now and taking the game -- winning the game, that is -- more seriously... Anybody else concerned about this sudden lack of intensity from CPJ? Seems odd to me, and something Chan would've gotten crucified for...

We probably need the rest, to be at 100% for the bowl game.

A healthy JWD, Vance and Sed Griffin means that LSU scores 10 points less in the game.

The redshirts and such got a lot of work after practice during bowl practices under Coach Gailey. We basically scrimmaged against each other after practice and got a lot of evaluation and work. This mostly took place after all the other preparation was done and they regular guys were mostly already sent in to the locker room.

Did we seem unfocused and in-intense during the season? CPJ is dancing with the girl that brought him and preparing like this is just another regular season game. He did win 9 of them with this strategy.

Suddenly focusing for your bowl game, shows that you didn't prepare correctly during the season . . . as would be shown by LSU's record this year.

Just off the top of my head, PJ was 14-3 in the postseason as GSU head coach.

I thought about that too. And I'm convinced that it isn't the same. It is more like a regular season game with one week prep.

I hope this bowl prep approach works for us. If it doesn't then I know PJ will find a way that does.

I will say we can only hope that we somehow get to a BCS playoff while PJ is around.

What about season openers? You have more prep time for them if you need it...
