So much for Chizik's speech about getting back to smash mouth football. I'm just glad Gus didn't end up at Miami as was rumored. This guy can coach an offense!

Let me get this straight. Awburn fired TT for trying the spread offense because it didn't work....then they hired another defensive minded HC who brought in a different OC to run the spread. I'm confused.....:ugh:

Chizik is just a figurehead at Auburn. There is such a lack of integrity at that footbal program...too much board/booster influrence.

I look forward to that program becoming a wasteland and us picking up their stud recruits.

Much to my surprise, this really could happen. Auburn could implode in the state of Alabama and as their reputation goes down, you would think that less Georgia kids would go there. Maybe UT has a great opportunity to pick up those kids, as well as a couple for Tech.

Troy and possibly UAB will also benefit. It would be interesting if Auburn's troubles continued the momentum Troy has right now.

Auburn's made a joke of themselves lately, but folks, Malzahn can flat out coach. And recruit.

Absolutely, 100% agreed.

Malzahn's presence potentially changes everything I thought about the Chizik hire.

This guy just led the nation in total offense two seasons in a row, with a BALANCED offense, at TULSA. He knows what he is doing.

Also Tulsa nearly got Marcus Wright. Malzahn knows how to find and make use of elite niche players that have remained under the radar.

I'm not saying Malzahn can't find diamonds in the rough, but Marcus Wright wasn't under the radar. He was a Parade All American and the Texas 5A player of the year.

Gus also has a knack for drama (ie. Mitch Mustain saga).

I'll believe it when I see it. Malzahn was coaching high school 4 years ago. He is almost exactly what Tony Franklin was this time last year....a new hot offense mind that racked up big numbers at a second tier school. Patrick Nix did the same thing!!!!!

The bottom line is having good players that fit your system. Al Borges was a genius when he had Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, and Jason Campbell. 3 years later he gets canned. Look at Norm Chow. UCLA sucked on offense this year, but he was considered the best offensive coordinator in the nation when he had Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.

Will Malzahn be successful at Auburn? Yes, if Chizik recruits well.

Will Malzahn be the difference in whether Auburn is good or not? NO

Will Malzahn be gone in 3 years after Bama crushes Auburn for the 4th year in a row? YES

Malzahn's offense won 10 games at Arkansas - with no QB or passing game. And that whole "Wildcat" craze that's sweeping college and pro football is his.

The only major studs he has recruited are Mitch Mustain and Damian Williams. The only reason he was able to land them for Arkansas was because he was their high school coach at Springdale.

Auburn will struggle with recruiting due to Alabama being a national championship contender again, and the Kiffins coming to UT.

He wasn't at Arkansas long enough to recruit, but all those kids at Tulsa running up those big numbers are freshmen and sophomores that he recruited.

They'll figure it out in a year or two AT. Isn't it funny that the same fan base who said "CPJ will show 'em that his offense will work in a BCS conference" is now pooh-poohing Malzahn? Anybody who came up with a new idea that worked was new and unproven at some point in time.

Think Kodi Burns is pleased at the turn of events?

I've always liked any Auburn folks that I have met personally, hope it works out for 'em. Anybody else who hates UGA and Bama is okay by me!

fwiw, outside of his being a huge egotistical bastard, I really like Malzahn and expect him to do well if he can keep a fairly decent relationship with Chizik.

Wouldn't be surprised if Auburn folk wanted Malzahn as HC, but didn't think their fanbase would accept a mid-major OC right away.

We ran "wildcat" in high school 10 years ago. Its not new...its just new to the college/pro game. And who needs a passing game when you have Darren Mcfadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis. Did GT have a passing game this year?

I'm not saying that Malzahn can't succeed, I'm just saying that he hasn't really done anything thing to prove that he will turn Auburn's offense around immediately.

Gus was the first to make the Wildcat work consistently at a high level of football. That's all I was saying. And I'm not saying he will turn Auburn around immediately, just that he is a good hire and a proven offensive coach.

People are comparing Gus to Tony Franklin, and saying he doesn't have the personnel right now at Auburn to run his offense. But what makes Gus so good is that he takes what he has and molds the offense around them, rather than trying to cram a certain system on guys that aren't equipped to run it (like what Auburn tried to do this year).

They don't have to air it out - that's why I brought up his success at Arkansas without a passing game. The Wildcat is what brought balance to their conventional running game while keeping the ball in their playmaker's hands more often.

Arkansas still had McFadden, Jones, and Hillis the year after Malzahn left and were nowhere near as good on offense. And they were terrible on offense the year before he arrived (actually for many years before he arrived).
