Is anyone a little suprised that Payton Manning won the league MVP award?

Kurt Warner and Drew Brees both put up better stats and seemably did more with less. Both Warner and Brees were missing their top recievers for long stretches througout the season, and Reggie bush was injuered for the season too. Plus, when you consider that the colts won the superbowl 2 years ago, it's not like Peyton had a lot of work to do to make something out of nothing. I think Werner and Brees got shafted. I guess you can say Brees did not make the playoffs, but Warner did, and look who won their first game...

Payton's Stats:
Yds - 4002
TD's - 27
Yds/gm - 250
QB Rating - 95

Warner's Stats:
Yds - 4583
TD's - 30
Yds/GM - 286
QB Rating - 97

Brees' Stats:
Yds - 5069
TD - 34
Yds/GM - 316
QB Rating - 96

To me it's just another example of the media's emphatuation with the Mannings.

Manning also won 9 straight until yesterday on a team decimated with injuries again. The other two guys are not in his league.

You're right because Mannings stats are so much better, and last I checked they all three played in the SAME LEAGUE... And yes he went on a 9 game winning streak (5 of which were wins over Houston, Cleveland, Cincinatti, Detroit, and Jacksonville, and only 2 of which were over playoff teams) but he basically did it with the same team that went 13-3 last season, and won the superbowl and went 12-4 the year before... The Cardinals went 8-8 last year and 5-11 two years ago. Warner did more with less. A second year coach, a rookie running back, and Anquan Boldin hurt half the season. Manning had Clark, Wayne, and Harrison all season.

Not sure I'd argue too much with John about NFL MVP dude. He sort of knows the territory pretty well.

Also, the MVP is not about stats, it's about who accomplished more. Yes Brees had a great individual year, but the Saints failed again. The Cards did win their division and beat ATL yesterday, but 8-8 isn't much to get excited about. Peyton pulled the Colts back together and go them into the playoffs in a much tougher division. No question in my mind.

Peyton was my choice. The name of the award is MOST VALUABLE...and Peyton was clearly not himself at the beginning of the season due to injuries, and when he returned to form they won nine straight. It's pretty apparent how valuable he is to his team.

VALUABLE as he was, he failed to lead his healthy team to victory, and lowly Kurt Warner managed to do just that.

It's kinda the same as coach of the year in my opinion. Of course Urban Meyer/Pete Carrol/Bob Stoops could win every year since they're are probably the best coaches in the league, but it's about who steps their game up to a new level and takes their team to new levels and new accomplishments, especially when there were low expectations.

People were picking the colts to win the Superbowl this year. Injured or not, if Manning had played better in the beginning, they would not have been so desperate in the end of the season. If anything, they failed to meet expectations, especially now that they are out of the playoffs.

I think someone who steps up and leads a team to accomplish new things, unexpectedly should be the person who wins it.

What? We just got through saying that he won nine in a row when healthy. The MVP is a regular season award, it has nothing to do with the playoffs. There are separate awards for that.

Warner and Brees also had some pretty bad games this year. The cardinals tanked at the end of the season with wins only over division foes. Warner's play during this stretch was nothing to be excited about. That's why everyone had written them off before the playoffs. If they were in any division aside from the NFC or AFC West, the Cardinals would have been home for the playoffs.

Brees' stinkers actually cost the Saints a shot at the playoffs. For all the marvelous games he put up, he also had some stinkers on the road, and being in the NFC South, that doomed them to sit at home this week. As someone mentioned before, stats are pretty, but don't make someone valuable. For example, I didn't think LT deserved the MVP trophy a few years ago. I fully thought it should have gone to Brees. Brees turned around a Saints organization that was 3-13 a year ago. This turnaround also sparked a newly excited fanbase that made playing in the Superdome a formidable task. All LT did was get the record for most TDs in a season. That's a great accomplishment, but that's not worthy of MVP, that's qualification for Off. Player of the Year.

And Warner didn't help turn the cardinals around? The reason they stunk at the end of the season was because they had clinched and had no chance at #1 and #2 so they pretty much shut it down for the last 2 or 3 games. That's why the seemed to have limped in...

There's a difference between shutting it down, and having your a$$ kicked week after week up to the playoffs. The NE game basically turned into a rest your starters case because the Cards had gotten hit in the mouth right out the gate, and decided to cut their losses. In fact, if you want to bemoan the Colts not playing in playoff teams during their win streak, think about this:

The Cardinals, for the entirety of the season, only beat three teams outside of their division. 3. But let's not stop there. The three teams that Arizona beat were: Miami, Buffalo, and Dallas. That means that Arizona only beat ONE playoff team during the season. And all of those games were at home. So, this season really didn't say anything much past the fact that the NFC West was the easiest road to the playoffs. That doesn't speak at all to Kurt Warner's value to the team. Do I think that Leinart would have done better? Maybe not. But with the division the Cards were in, I don't think it's that far outside of the realm of possibility that they could have still won the division. Who else would have? the 49ers? the Seahawks? the Rams?!

Who won their first game in the playoffs?

Falcons were 5th in power rankings, and the chargers were 12th...

And clearly the decision was made before, but i think the first round of the playoffs helps to illustrate my point...

The point that home-field advantage is a good thing? The Cards had proven that all year. Trust me, they will go to Carolina or NY and get STOMPED. They have all year when going to the east coast. Like I said earlier, all of their out of division games were at home. Besides, that still doesn't make any argument about MVP. Both Manning and Warner played exceptionally well. The Colts just lost a coin toss, and the defense let them down. Warner's defense, on the other hand, protected his lead.

No, it doesn't. The MVP is a regular season award. It has nothing to do with the playoffs.

i agree that the playoffs have no bearing in who gets the MVP, but i still think the playoffs prove my point of which team is playing better this season because of their QB...

By your analogy, Flacco should have gotten rookie of the year over Ryan?

Ed Reed, Ray Lewis or Pittsburgh Paolo (safety)

Troy Palomalu born as Troy Benjamin Aumua, but now legally named Troy Aumua Palomalu after adopting the use his mother's maiden name (Palomalu) and then legally changing it.

my vote for MVP:
James Harrison, OLB for the Pittsburgh Steelers
