Utah is pissed, and I agree with them (and USC, Texas).

Utah's attorney general is investigating the BCS for a possible violation of federal antitrust laws after the undefeated Utes were left out of the national title game for the second time in five years.

Attorney General Mark Shurtleff contends the BCS unfairly puts schools like Utah, which is a member of a conference without an automatic bid to the lucrative bowl games, at a competitive and financial disadvantage.

Texas and USC are pissin in the wind. Texas is a bunch of crybabies IMO. They are not in the NC game simply because of THEIR conference. Go cry to YOUR conference. Change YOUR conference rules to have your own mini-playoff or something but get out of my face nationally. Your a bunch of whiners trying to garner attention outside of your own problem conference.

USC, prior to the PAC 10 winning a few games at the end, also has no reason to cry. Travel out east and play some meaningful teams like Georgia Tech, you weenies. They've had their day in the sun and will continue to do so because of their overwhelming advantage playing weak teams in a weak conference. We know you can beat up on cold weather teams like , Penn State, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Play some real southern teams.

Utah, has an impressive record with four wins over Top 25 teams. But so what really. Ball State was looking like a God there for a while too. When you don't play 10 real games a year it's hard to tell what you got. At least they can cry a little, but move on already. The rules were the rules, you had a nice season.

This is exactly the type of thing I was pointing to when I have said repeatedly that any playoff system would have to involve all 11 D1A conferences....with 5 at-large bids.

Why did you stop there? With the way you are going, I am sure you can come up with reasons Oklahoma and Florida shouldn't be there.

I am not arguing for playoff. It's just painfully obvious that the stupid national championship game has got to go. Let people vote whatever they like for the final voting. Just like in 1990 when we got the co-championship. Most likely, we wouldn't have made it to the national championship game.

I do not feel that way at all. Tom Osborne (Nebraska) said that we were the best team he played all year and that included Colorado. Miami was hot at the end, as was Washington, but so were we.

Regarding the NC game, the BCS is still better than the old bowl method. The BCS games are better, #1 and #2 meet each other, something that didn't happen very often before. People are just whiners first, the BCS is far superior to the old method.

I think the BCS did its job. It picked the two best teams according to a method that was agreed to by every major conference. So those conference's teams should just shut the @#$% up already.

The only reason this has gone on this long is because Alabama wasn't the same team at the bowl game. So what, their best player was out. So what. Everyone is hoping that UF beats OU now and then they can attack.

OU and UF belong there (the only argument would be for Texas in first over OU IMO). They got there based on the rules, everyone should just shut up already.

p.s. I love how Texas players and coaches tell everyone "how tough OSU was" and "how they beat a GREAT OSU team." Who are they kidding?

p.p.s. After PSU gots its legs, USC didn't seem so dominant either.

p.p.p.s. I'm not a defender of the Big 10, but they should be hollering "let's play the games in Chicago in January" and see how effective USC is all of a sudden.

They opened up their season at Virginia this year. They(Virginia) were picked by almost everybody to do better than we were, so they're already doing more than what you just asked them to. They also played the #3 team in the nation Ohio State out of conference, and play Notre Dame every year.

You can say what you want about OSU being pretenders, but that's still a damn good OOC game, and people like to laugh at Notre Dame but they're no Jacksonville State or Gardner Webb. There's only room for so many OOC games, and USC consistently has one of the best OOC schedules in the nation year in and year out.

The only way any of this gets resolved, I hate to say this, is by a Curt Flood type law suit. Someone above the NCAA will eventually tell them to make 8 super conferences with ALL Championship winners in a 8 game playoff. But, you will never get everybody to agree unless it comes from someone with more power than the BCS and TV.

That'd be awesome. They really should do something like that. Tell USC to come up north on Thanksgiving weekend to play a Big 10 team instead of some pointless Pac-10 rivalry game.

I would love to see Utah have a chance to play for the national championship, but this investigation business is ridiculous. If Utah wants a shot at the top game, they can work to get into a BCS conference. My guess is they are like a lot of teams who like to play in a less competitive conference so they can win more games and have a dominant record that their fans can be jazzed about. You can't have it both ways. Play with the big boys and take a chance of getting beat every week or play in a weak conference and enjoy success at that level. It's the opposite of the SEC teams who brag about being in the mighty SEC, but then want to cry about their schedule being unfair because they have to play so many good teams.

try traveling the PAC 10 schedule and suddenly that "crap conference" seems a lot harder.

its one thing to ride a bus from Athens to Opelika, quite another to travel from LA to Corvalis. its worth comparing the travel distances - these guys are not pro athletes that are free to do as they want. they have to be in class. all that travel takes a lot of time, dont underestimate that

USC would probably beat any team in the nation right now, i think Oklahoma is the team that got the benefit of everyone hyping the Big 12 (why, i dont know). i think they will get beat pretty soundly by Florida.

on another note, the last thing we need is to start suing the NCAA or the BCS to get into the championship game. with all the problems that the US has right now, the Attorney General of Utah should be spending his time more wisely

One thing for sure: the more lawyers, judges, and legislators that get involved, the better the results will be. Personally, I can't wait to see airbags required in football helmets.

I heard an interesting stat today in my MGT class:

America is putting out 10 times as many lawyers per capita as Japan
Japan is putting out 10 times as many engineers per capita as America

Oops.

Nah, this is more important.

I'd much rather have all the lawyers and politicians engaged with sorting out the BCS than trying to fix the economy.

They used to play @ND at the end of the season in December, like how ND plays @USC at the end of the season. Of course, they had to wuss out and have the game @ND played in early October instead.

Going to the BCS title game would likely have a noticeable effect on Utah's economy, don't you think? I'd like to see numbers somewhere, but my guess is that the difference between winning the BCS title game and the Sugar bowl is tens of millions of dollars for the university, which is part of the state government. Not to mention the intangibles such as increased applications to the university, increased exposure for the state itself, etc.

EDIT: Not to say that this is the most important thing on politicians' plates, of course, but it might not be something they should ignore. People like to point out that sports are businesses nowadays, but then they seem to forget how much money is at stake when discussing the BCS. Utah's state university system is getting shafted(they feel) out of a lot of money here.

They could correct this problem by enacting legislation as did Georgia. The state requires GTAA and UGAA to be private corporations and may not use state money. That's the reason Stegman was built by the state as a "livestock exhibit hall" and Alexander was built by the alumni association.

this is also why the AA has its own trademarks that are different than those of the University

note that the GT used on football helmets, for example, is much squatter and fatter than the GT used by "georgia tech". when you get a letter from the AA, it has the AA GT logo; when you get a letter from georgia tech, it has their skinnier GT logo
